Not only my point stands, I still remember a world almost without narcissists, people traveling for fun, not to take a photo to brag, times where people listened to doctors not some people recommending horse dewormer, UK not suffering due to Brexit consequences ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8425058/ ), people actually bonding in person,...

Or in words of Umberto Eco ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umberto_Eco ):

“Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community ... but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It's the invasion of the idiots”

You are underestimating the horror that Facebook did to human society. I am accusing them of crime against humanity. And all that, just for selling ads - where you will be able to see the comparison with IG Farben, do whatever it takes, to earn money.

I accept the argument, that if they wouldn't, someone else would, but nevertheless THEY did it or we would be talking about someone else.

    > And then the time towards the brexit disaster was like watching a car crash in slow motion, and behind the wheel there were clowns and people who insisted clowns had to be taken very seriously for a reason they can cannot describe

The movie _Brexit: The Uncivil War_ from 2019 [0] is not only amazingly entertaining, it also details the so-called _car crash in slow motion_ in vivid dramatic details quite easy to comprehend.

Basically, they found (with the help of Cambridge Analytica and FB) a few million Brits that never voted and rarely got polled, then targeted them with nonsensical pro-Brexit rhetoric for years, before making sure they get to vote.

It could be argued that the original movement that paved the way to such a trend was the Islamist wave which led to the attacks of 9/11 (and the following Islamist attacks worldwide), which politically weaponized Islam using lots of money and everything Internet had to offer.

Similar scheme led to the Tea Party, which led to the Trump election in the U.S. [1], which seems to be linked to some ongoing global trends like neo-fascism and identity politics. As a matter of fact, it appears that some clever people found a way to exploit civil society shortcomings using some of the data hoarding tools we call social medias.

The whole climate change drama is caught in the same Web (pun intended) of manipulation, and it might end up aggravating the situation, to the benefit of big oil.

These waves make little sense to most people, excepted that it shows a strong will to create new opportunities while shaking the status quo, and profit from the shakedown. As some do (will) profit from the unrest created.

Maybe it's time to harden our democracies so to make them resistant to such schemes and manipulations, without ending up with an Orwellian nightmare (looking at you, Down Under people).
