Also the plot of El Mariachi https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0104815/ and its sequel, Desperado.
> But Alien being barely more than a higher budget Dark Star remake
granted, but this wasn't a Point Break remake either. Dark Star is pretty much a student film turned into a blockbuster. Even El Mariachi->Desperado wasn't as different as Dark Star->Alien was.
They're doing it for exposure!
But really, they helped a friend - or family member - make a movie. I would help a friend make a movie. And I'd be thrilled if he made it big. Granted, I have the luxury of having a steady job - and of not having movie making be my career. But still.
I mean, I get what you're saying. But let's look at Robert Rodriguez and the cast of El Mariachi. He put several of them in Desperado, and I bet they got paid working money for that.
Looking through the cast of El Mariachi, it looks to me like every single one of them who made any other movies, also made movies with Robert Rodriguez. It seems like if they wanted to act, Rodriguez helped them get work. I don't know that for sure, but that's what Googling the results looks like.
There are many facets to the discussion of course, but many examples of movies and shows that were exceptional based on lower budgets. When comparing the budget of an entire season of The Boys to almost any single Marvel film though, the wasted money on individual Marvel Films is far more apparent.
Movies like Desperado, Way of the Gun, No Country for Old Men, Fall (by Eric Shaeffer) and many others are far more enjoyable to me than big budget blockbusters, but others may disagree... Those had far lower budgets than many ensemble cast/empty script superhero movies, but preferences are always subjective, so it's not really something I'd really want to argue with anyone about.
Teacher is totally right. I used to be a movie buff, I started with the best movies and drilled down like. If I like a movie, I will check director or hero/heroine and start watching their flims. This started in 2004 beginning of torrents. I almost all movies, I ever liked in a 2tb hard disk. Nowadays I just re-download for better print but even I am not sure why I am doing I do it. When it started to hitt downturn is, at a point I was watching movies just to understand what the director is trying to tell as someone has produced this movie. I slowly started to cut back like I don't watch movies if it's more than 130mins and started cutting down the time.
If is say what's my best its mostly the ones between 1980 to 2005. Everything after that was too much CGI or it was like okay movie.
Like comedies I liked were Encino man, son in law, first few parts of police academy, jury duty.
Action movies Conair, lost in space, broken Arrow, specialist, assassins. Desperado.
