Duck Dynasty

2012 · TV series · 30 min episodes · 11 seasons

RealityComedy

At first glance the Robertsons look like a typical Louisiana family who lives for duck hunting season. A closer look, however, reveals they live very well because of duck hunting season. The Robertsons own and operate Duck Commanders, which specializes in fabricating duck calls and decoys out of salvaged swamp wood. The company has grown from a mom-and-pop operation to a multimillionaire sporting empire, established in 1973 by family patriarch Phil (aka the Duck Commander) and now run by his business-savvy son, Willie. "Duck Dynasty" follows the Robertsons and their booming business, which also employs Willie's wife, Korie, his brother Jase and Uncle Si, a Vietnam vet and colorful character who keeps the guys in the workshop occupied with his many stories.

No, its the way you talk, interests, activities, goals, etc.

Do you remember the TV show duck dynasty where a rural family form the south became millionaries selling sporting goods?

How would you compare their socials status to a Berkeley undergrad with parents who work in the bay?

I remember watching duck dynasty, great kids show and I loved it, but I doubt it holds up for adults.

Duck Dynasty is a reality TV show, not a kids show.

I can't tell if you know that and are making a jab at them or not. If you are, then I think you're proving the point well, because you think it's clearly not a show for adults, while it was the most-watched nonfiction show in history. Clearly, tastes vary widely.

Duck dynasty isn’t a kids show. It’s a show that covers a family that makes duck calls. It’s the most popular non-fiction tv show ever created. I assume most people on hackernews haven’t seen an episode. I personally never watched it as it doesn’t appeal to me.

Duck Dynasty's audience was not substantially less rural / blue collar than the cast.

There's a glut of "urban white collar porn": Nearly all mainstream television sitcoms and dramas.

I don't actually watch the "channel", but The Expanse is produced by SyFy and is excellent.

And, yeah, Duck Dynasty and Cake Boss are nowhere near where A&E and TLC were when they launched, but they are family-centered sitcoms, more or less, in a time with a lack of those.

I won't defend Honey Boo Boo or that sort of thing, though.

Anyway, Disney is now the company of Star Wars and Marvel, not just Mickey and princesses. If companies want to take a risk and change their brand, I guess it's their right. There's tons of content out there if we don't like it.

Reality show world is really grasping at straws. Every single one wants to be the next Duck Dynasty and you have all bunch of crazy and strange ideas. In this case they are messing with people's lives. I am just waiting for the meta-reality show -- a show about creating a reality TV show.

Reading this article made me realize how disconnected I am from popular culture. I only know of Duck Dynasty because my relatives watched it while I was visiting them. All I know about Miley Cyrus is that she's a singer. Until recently, I thought Hannah Montana was a different person. I have no idea what the Dolphin's "Jonathan Martin versus Richie Icognito feud" is, but I'm guessing it's related to the football team. Finally, I only know about George Zimmerman because a friend told me to watch the South Park episode he was in. That's also how I found out that there was a World War Z movie starring Brad Pitt.
