"As I write, the number-one videocassette rental in America is the movie Dumb and Dumber. “Beavis and Butthead” remain popular (and influential) with young TV viewers. The plain lesson is that study and learning—not just of science, but of anything—are avoidable, even undesirable.”
Mike Judge's satire was lost on Sagan. Carl took his knee-jerk reaction and ran with it.

The list goes on. Lot's of movies that turned out to be classics or cult classics, or the start of some great careers.
I guess I always look at UI as like movies. Sure, we know a good movie when we see it, and "everyone" knows what a good movie is. Yet that's totally wrong as one person's "Dumb and Dumber" is another person's "Titanic" - and you should look at that comment from both perspectives.
People still make bad movies that should be good. And make good movies that should be bad. If it was easy, everyone would make good movies.
It looks incredibly uncomfortable. It could make a great movie prop for the next iteration of dumb and dumber.

I’m not necessarily disagreeing with your list, even though some of those are mediocre at best, but yeah I did mean per year, and limited to Hollywood (Parasite for instance not counting). And no, ok, I will also straight up disagree with the second Knives out Movie which I thought was absolute trash. A perfect example of poor storytelling and the form over substance of modern cinema.
But just taking say 1992 you have Last of the Mohicans, The Unforgiven, My Cousin Vinny, Malcolm X, Bad Lieutenant, Scent of a Woman, Reservoir Dogs, Dracula, Chaplin.
And then a bunch of fun schlomp like Arizona Dream, Basic Instinct, Sister Act, Army of Darkness, Home Alone 2, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Mighty Ducks, Wayne’s World.
These are all undoubtedly great movies.
And then another huge bunch of watchable stuff easily comparable to some of your mentions like Watcher or High Life.
And 1992 is not an outlier.
In 1993 you have Jurrasic Park, Groundhog Day, Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, Scindlers List, Meanace 2 Society, Alive, Dazed and Confused, Falling Down, In The Name of The Father, True Romance, Demolition Man, Carlitos Way, The Secret Garden, Philadelphia, A Perfect Workd, Cool Runnings, Short Cuts.
In 1991 Silence of The Lambs, Ternimator 2, JFK, Point Break, Thelma and Louise, Boyz in the Hood, The Doors, My Own Private Idaho, Barton Fink, The Fisher King, Naked Lunch.
In 1990 Goodfellas, Hunt for Red October, Total Recall, Edward Scissorhands, Home Alone, Godfather 3, Dances with Wolves, Tremors, Back to the Future 3, Awakenings, The Witches, Wild at Heart, Jacobs Ladder, Nikita, Slacker, Millers Crossing.
And the quality difference is massive too, not just somewhat better. Like just Millers Crossing is miles better than anything that has been made in the last 5 years, and I’m picking at random.
In 1994 Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Speed, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Stargate, Natural Born Killers, The Crow, Clercs, Maverick, Ed Wood, In the Mouth of Madness, Interview With The Vampire.
I could go on.
And this is not even talking about how the 80s is a better decade for cinema, or how the 70s is the peak of the power of the author with far more experimental, artistic, and substantial productions.
Has quality declined? Yes. Massively. Humongously. Stupendously.
I think the movie has already been made. It's called, "Dumb and Dumber."
First association that came to my mind was the movie Dumb And Dumber.
I remember seeing Dumb and Dumber in a theater when it came out, and laughing until my gut hurt. While doing this, part of my mind was saying the slapstick was so obvious, overdone and predictable, why am I laughing at it?
Perhaps it's like watching a Laurel and Hardy movie. Fans know that if there's a puddle in the street, Ollie will step into it and will sink in up to his neck. I know it's coming, everyone knows its coming, and it still makes me laugh. Maybe it's so funny because Hardy will look directly at the camera with a long-suffering "look what they made me do again" expression.
My 3 minutes in Hardcore mode:
ok lets do ths. I have no idea what is happening or how long i can go without typing before all that i ahve typed before will be lost: I feel like im making way more mistakes than i usually do, which is weird because I usually dont have to look at what Im typing as much either. I dont know. I have basically nothing left to say. And i am scarted to lose this challenge. It seems only one minute is over so far. So we have some ways to go. Quite a while actually. Closing in on half, but not really if i look at it properly. This bprogress bar at the top is really stressing me out. I feel llike Keanu Reeves in Speed. Or Sandra Bullock. Or ... What this guys name again. The one from dumb and dumber... ah commonm you know this! Dennis Hopper is the bad guy. Ah... I cant believe I'm blanking on the name. He was in Newsroom, which was not quite as good as it was supposed to be. Actually quite a lot less -... goood? I guess. Well, anywaya. Araron Sorkin is kind of hit or miss if you think about it. For example Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was ver y entertaining but the "high-stakes" scenarios they went for near the end of the season just didn't really work for a TV show setting. But overall I enjoyed it quite a lot I guess. Almost done!
This words was on a car from film Dumb and Dumber with Jim Kerry
I worked in an adult care facility. One of the patients, a 90 year old man, was a painter. He made so many of the pieces that hung around the facility.
We were friendly. He would talk to me. He would ask for me when he needed something. He told me I reminded him of his son.
He asked me one day if I knew how to paint. I said no. He asked if I wanted to learn. I said yes. He said go buy these supplies and show up here tomorrow morning. $500 later I was ready.
We watched Bob Ross literally for a week. Then he showed me how to gesso a canvas. Then we painted. And painted. And pulled all nighters like we were 20.
He passed away 2 months after. I still paint and I never would have otherwise.
Edit: just one funny thing I remember. This man asked my wife to the movies! She said yet. She went to pick him up but he was tired. They watched “Dumb and Dumber” (in 2017) and had popcorn. He fell asleep before the moves was 1/4 over. :-)
What the author is describing is similar to what was going on with the Mt Gox exchange a few years ago.
You have a product that should be fungible trading at two exchanges. In one exchange you have a free market and what should be very close to the true price of the product. In our example this would be most of the bitcoin markets and the Hong Kong stock exchange. In another market for some reason the price has become dislodged from its true price, this is usually due to liquidity issues. In our example this is the Mt Gox exchange and the Shenzhen stock exchange.
Now there is what appears to be an obvious arbitrage opportunity but if you look closer, and you really don't need to do any real in-depth analysis to figure this out, you'll see that the market is acting rationally by pricing in the liquidity issues to the shares on one exchange.
I mean, if the shares don't trade and you aren't sure when the regulators will let them trade you essentially have an illiquid asset that you can only really trade by brokering a trade yourself with a counter party outside of the stock exchange. And if you ever wondered what liquidity was worth, well you're going to find out that liquidity can be very expensive.
It will be interesting to see just how far the Chinese regulators will push this as it could have spill over effects onto the American and European stock markets.
So if you've ever thought about what you actually own if you buy a share of a Chinese company on a US stock market, say Alibaba( BABA US Equity), you aren't actually getting a share in Alibaba in the same way you can buy a share in Microsoft.
You are actually getting something called an ADR. see: http://www.investopedia.com/university/adr/
It's somewhat similar to the brief case full of IOU's that Jim Carey hands over in the movie Dumb and Dumber. Given that you don't own actual shares in the Chinese company but a proxy for them, the Chinese regulators can have a very chilling effect on these shares by shutting down trading of the actual shares in their market as described in the article.
If regulators were to say suspend trading for Alibaba shares in China, its not entirely clear how to go about pricing their respective ADR shares that trade in the US, well at least it isn't to me. Fundamental valuations would still be useful but what discount would you give them, given that the underlying shares are no longer trading on their home exchange, and what exactly would you own in this case?
TL/DR Or put another way liquidity has value, maybe the HFT value proposition was right after all? :)
A much lower-brow version of the same joke, from the movie Dumb and Dumber:
Lloyd: I'll bet you twenty dollars I can get you gambling before the day is out!
Harry: No!
Lloyd: I'll give you three to one odds.
Harry: No.
Lloyd: Five to one.
Harry: No.
Lloyd: Ten to one?
Harry: You're on!
Lloyd: I'm gonna get ya!
Harry: Nu uh!
Lloyd: I don't know how but I'm gonna get ya.
You don't like the movie Dumb and Dumber?
Side projects usually enjoy a brief moment in the sun, and then start losing traffic (or in modern parlance - money). Any further effort to promote them is fruitless, because the chances are; the same people you are targeting have already seen your project. It's like when movie franchises (Dumb and Dumber for example) try and milk the format.
A golden rule I try to live by is try many different things. Try every single avenue you can. When one avenue burns out, go down another one.
Come on, it was just a funny movie along the lines of Dumb and Dumber, Harold & Kumar or Fletch.
There was some vague sci-fi mashed up with societal critique, but really this was a pretext to get Gun toting presidents, morons and scantily clad chics on screen with a fish-out-of-water present day man.
Dumb and Dumber! I love that movie!
I'm beginning to think that the movie "Dumb and Dumber" began its life as a documentary about the Hollywood marketing and distribution business.
