Good sci-fi has always been few and far between. I love sci-fi, but I also dislike a lot of it because a lot of it's not well written from a prose craft or character depth point of view. When it is, it's probably my favorite genre.
I feel like we're lucky to get one outstanding sci-fi book or series per decade.
I'll rattle off some notable books and films/TV (or in some cases both) from the last 20 years. Some of these overlap with other genres like horror, lit-fic, etc., but I consider them all sci-fi to some degree. Some are well known and some are obscure.
The Expanse, Europa Report, Moon, Primer, The Arrival, Never Let Me Go, For All Mankind (the unofficial Expanse prequel), Sleep Dealer (indie film that stuck with me), The Color Out of Space (2019 film of Lovecraft's story), Banshee Chapter, The Peripheral, Blindsight, Annihilation, I'm sure I could keep going...
I desperately want to see that in my lifetime. I give high odds that there's something alive under there. Maybe just single celled organisms or simple worm-like things like what lives near vents in Earth's oceans, but anything would be mind-blowing.
Then I want to see if its biology chemically resembles ours. If it does, it means some form of panspermia is true and the idea that life originated on Earth is the last remaining geocentrism.
There is a good sci-fi flick about it:

Of course for a film they made it a manned mission when IRL we would never do that, not just because it would take too long to get humans out there but because of contamination (in either direction).
„The Europa Report“ is IMO a pretty underrated movie: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/europa_report
They made a movie about that! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_Report
Europa Report (movie): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avzqYgtpdMQ I enjoyed it ^^
Have you seen the movie Europa Report ^^ ?
Some classify Truman Show as sci fi.
And depends on what you mean by "supernatural". There are many many movies without magic, but with possible future inventions. The category of hard scifi.
Europa report, primer, deep impact, robocop, starship troopers, blade runner, matrix, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, total recall, arrival, Jurassic Park, the man from earth, ...
But yeah, Gattaca is still my favourite movie.
Also, The Europa Report film, where astronauts search for life in the liquid ocean beneath ice on one of Jupiter's moons.
Soon... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_Report (the film is quite good)
Timecrimes (Los Cronicriménes) — a mind bending Spanish movie with time travel and paradoxes
AI (Artificial Intelligence) — about a little android boy who develops feelings and emotions
Gattaca
Summer Time Machine Blues (Japanese) — a hilarious movie with time travel (and all its paradoxes)
Moon
Europa Report
[I've avoided mentioning the more recent mainstream movies.]
Europa Report is a great sci-fi movie. Some people don't like its low-budgetness, but it's very much worth checking out.

In a distorted way. Alien invasion movies (or demons escaping from hell or any of many similar narrative tropes) are basically stories where our worst characteristics are projected onto ugly analogues of ourselves which are then heroically defeated by the cooperative effort of various good characteristics.
The problem is that by placing the origin of evil on the far side of some liminal threshold (species, space, stargates, hell) we generally fail to engage with it and so perpetuate the existence of an epistemological gap.
It's interesting to consider genre tropes as analogues of Kubler-Ross' stages of grief. Viewed in this light, Europa Report gains considerably.
For some reason I didn't really like The Martian (as in the movie). I guess after having read the book there just wasn't any surprise left, and I felt that this sort of story just works much better in book form. I prefer Europa Report over it. IMO Interstellar is the big popularizer of hard sci-fi though, or wouldn't you put it in that category? For me it took its liberties in just the right places where it's justified due to lack of more knowledge.
I like its style, it's the execution that bugs me.
If you pay attention, you can almost always tell if a movie is a low budget production, but the good ones don't feel like one.
But in Europa Report, that's evident through and through
Seems like a good weekend to watch Europa Report. I highly recommend that film to realistic sci fi fans, just hang in there for the first half hour or so with its nervous cuts.
Check out the movie Europa Report if you want an advance look at what lurks below the ice.
If you want to get hyped, I recommend the movie Europa Report.
For what it's worth, there's quite a decent s-f movie "Europa Report" about a manned mission to the Jupiter's moon.
It avoids most genre cliches, apart from the very ending maybe.
Huh? Gravity was massively hyped for its special effects and the very real feeling of exhilaration it creates. It’s an awesome action movie with none of the stereotypical and boring tropes of action movies. (Also, the cinematography is very much above average and I personally really loved its rhythm of quiet and action.)
The depiction of space hardware is actually awesomely realistic (to some level of detail) but I don’t recall anyone praising it for realism beyond that. Because it very much isn’t. (Still, getting the actual space hardware right is something not many movies manage to pull off and pretty impressive on its own.) I don’t think it matters very much or reduces the enjoyment very much. This movie is very much not about space travel.
Europa Report is a bit cringe but probably the best you can do with that kind of budget and in that respect it’s pretty and also pretty realistic.
I feel compelled to plug the 2013 sci-fi film "Europa Report"[1], a great movie that no one watched.
Space.com called it "awesome" and "stunningly realistic"[2].
