    > I struggle to remember hardly anything memorable from Netflix, especially their movies

For me there have been a few movies, off the top of my head:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraction_(2020_film)

In addition the first seasons of The Witcher and Altered Carbon, and the show Dark.

I canceled my subscription around 2020 though, got so fed up by the UX, so haven't watched much since.

This is all that needed to be said. Aside from all the other many examples from the post-90s, Upgrade is basically the formula the author is asking for and it came out the same summer this article was written. Hollywood still makes plenty of these types of films, probably more now than before thanks to helicopter money from streaming services. Take Triple Frontier, Extraction just from the last two years. I'm not going to say those are particularly good, but they're exactly the formula the author claims no longer gets made.

The actual difference is these types of movies are no longer tentpoles.

I don’t know. I watch a similar amount of movies each year, and I still enjoy it. If anyone is looking for some more obscure recommendations, can check out The Dreamers, and Stilyagi.

EDIT: I have to add that I reference movies a lot in conversation. Often, I’ll watch a movie then immediately call a family or friend to discuss some finer point. This happens frequently, sometimes for a fairly mundane movie detail.

EDIT2: Now I really want to make a list of movies just from this year, since my number has definitely gone up since COVID. I think I’d easily break 100 in 2021 alone.

EDIT3: Here’s a list from my Netflix history since June 1. Mix of TV and movies. I added Justice League Extended Edition and Replica even though they’re HBO because I watched them recently (within the last week). This isn’t really a representative list of my watching, plus I tend to watch a bunch of similar movies/shows, then switch to a new cluster. This group is particularly action heavy because I was playing a lot in the background recently while doing other work. All of these were fun! Even if I don’t think they are the best ever :))

    I don't think it's that simple.

As an anecdote i've recently seen Extraction with Chris Hemsworth, great movie but in the middle of the first big action scene, the camera goes through the windscreen of the back of the car without the glass being shattered. It was enough to pull me out of the action into a moment of disbelief.

    Breaking continuity has a cost

And to add to the points made in this article, regional data should also be exposed. Extraction could have made it to the #1 spot simply because it had Randeep Hooda and Chris Hemsworth in it and not because of the story-line. The whole of India would have been rooting for a Bollywood actor in a Hollywood film.

"FYI the law enforcement, legal system is a complete joke in India."

I kind of got the impression they don't like the police when watching "Extraction" which is an Indian movie with Chris Hemsworth in which they mow down cops for an hour.
