> Nearly all the movies that go to theaters aren't "meaningful art".
No but what they are is expensive, flashy, impressive productions which is the only reason people are comfortable paying upwards of $25 each to see them. And there's no way in the world that an AI movie is going to come anywhere close to the production quality of Godzilla vs Kong.
And like, yeah, their example videos at the posted link are impressive. How many attempts did those take? Are they going to be able to maintain continuity of a character's appearance from one shot to the next to form a coherent visual structure? How long can these shots be before the AI starts tripping over itself and forgetting how arms work?
Another piece was a science-fiction story about exploring an undiscovered tropical region of Antarctica. It imagines the Nimrod’s party making their way into the strange land of Bathybia, 22,000 feet below sea level. They used rafts made of giant, man-sized mushrooms to travel down rivers into a red jungle, encountering giant ticks, alcoholic algae, and huge carnivorous versions of microscopic Antarctic rotifers. A few years earlier, the German science-fiction author Kurd Lasswitz published the novel "Two Planets", about a Martian colony at the North Pole. It would influence a young Werner von Braun, who would later guide the US space program, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39571588
More recently, J. Michael Straczynski, creator of "Babylon 5", participated in the writers room for the 2021 movie "Godzilla vs Kong",
> Apex CEO Walter Simmons recruits former Monarch scientist and Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind to guide a search for a power source into the Hollow Earth, the Titans' homeworld. Lind is hesitant as his brother died in an expedition to the Hollow Earth due to a strong reverse-gravitational effect. He agrees when Walter reveals that Apex has developed HEAVs, specialized craft able to withstand the gravity field. Lind convinces Andrews to let Kong guide them via an outpost in Antarctica. Lind, Andrews, and an Apex team led by Walter's daughter Maia board a barge escorted by the US Navy, carrying a sedated and restrained Kong.
I think you need to read the articles and not just the headlines.
Eternals, Shang-Chi, and Black Widow were all profitable movies. They were flops for Marvel considering that the majority of its movies are huge blockbusters that come close to or surpass the $1b mark, but any other studio would have loved to have a "flop" like Shang-Chi. And considering that all 3 came out during the pandemic when movie attendance was severely depressed around the world, $400m is an amazing number. (For comparison, Godzilla vs Kong made approximately the same box office as these 3 films, had the same sized budget including marketing...and is considered a huge success.)
This explains what happens when you factor INFLATION in. https://screenrant.com/ant-man-wasp-quantumania-box-office-m...
I don't understand what you're trying to say with this reference? At any rate, The Incredible Hulk predates the Disney acquisition of Marvel (TIH was released by Universal) and is the last Marvel film not to make a profit at the box office.
If you think Godzilla vs Kong was one of the worst movies ever, I don't think you've watched very many movies.
I'd put The Wickerman (either version), The Fountain, and The Final Countdown (1980, nothing to do with the song, sadly) as easily worse than Godzilla vs Kong, and that's just off the top of my head.
It's certainly not a great movie, but it's well in-line with what you would expect from the title; slightly plausible plot, big monsters fighting in cities, trademark roar. Nowhere near the best movies, but strongly in the middle.
I'm a cinema guy, go to cinema about once a week. But to be honest, nobody misses movies like Godzilla vs. Kong. I think one of the worst movies ever.
The business of running movie theatres is what he is talking about and it's certainly changing.
In Denmark the movies Godzilla vs. Kong, Nomadland and Black Widow will not be shown in major cinemas.
The reason is that Warner Bros. and Disney (Marvel) have either shortened the exclusivity period (Warner Bros) or set the streaming premiere at the same day the movie airs in cinemas (Disney).
The core of the issue is that the cinemas have to pay the same amount although the terms are clearly worse.
I can't help but think that the loss in sales of merchandise will take a hit, but i could be wrong and things will continue as they are now.
Agreed. Blue text on white background is jarring. And I was wondering what the original Netscape Grey was!
Argh. Hoping "Godzilla vs Kong" reviews were going to be better. When will Hollywood learn the secret to a good kaiju film = less humans, more monsters ;)
>>The studio's 2021 slate includes projects such as The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Other films include Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In The Heights, Reminiscence, Malignant, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard and Cry Macho.
well this is an impressive line up! i usually take a pass of $20 or go on Tuesdays for movies that are worth $6-$7 , but with $15 for new movies and HBO shows this is a no brainer (YMMV)
But i do miss the big screen experience , may be cheap home theater ideas will rise up and grant a % of that experience
