Though spanish, the Netflix movie Klaus from a few years back was a real surprise. It looked so lovely, almost film like. I hoped its success would have sparked more such movies but apparently not.

    A couple things:

    1. The academy has had a significant increase of young voters in the past 10 years or so. Generally speaking, young voters are more likely to take animation as a "serious" medium.

    2. These interviews were always somewhat overstated. Of course some voters have stupid rationales, but I don't think this dominates the academy.

    3. Disney's Inside Out 2 was nowhere close to winning the award this year - Flow's biggest competition was The Wild Robot, which did gross far more than Inside Out 2, but far below Inside Out 2.

If you look at the past couple years, The Boy and the Heron (Studio Ghibli) won over Across the Spider-Verse (with Pixar's movie Elemental nowhere close) in 2023, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio won over Across the Spider-Verse (with Pixar's movie Turning Red nowhere close) in 2022, etc.

I'm curious what year you're thinking about above. Perhaps Toy Story 4 over Klaus in 2019?

There are a ton of great Christmas movies on Netflix. We just watched Christmas Chronicles again last night. Klaus is great. The Wallace and Gromit ones…I could go on

Maybe you aren’t being suggested kids movies. Most Xmas productions are. The hallmark/romance style of Xmas movie seems to be for housewives.

And there are lots of people who just want background noise. Before streaming it was just leaving the TV on while you did other stuff. Before that it was radio. Daytime programming has always been like this.

    It’s not a Netflix invention.

I'm not sure I still buy that. Super Mario was great. I think the Troll movies are very well done and entertaining. Despicable Me, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Rio, Klaus, Iron Giant, and Studio Ghibli films are pretty good and competitive to the low-mid tier Pixar.

Everything about Klaus seems like something I wouldn't like... I'm iffy about Santa movies, I definitely don't like the "backstory which explains every minor detail"... and yet, it's fantastic. It somehow breaks through schlocky fake sincerity and makes it to real sincerity in a way that most shows & movies don't.

Klaus, Jingle Jangle, and Christmas Chronicles are on our annual Christmas watch list. Some of the best holiday movies ever made.

idk about you but I know of atleast 15 gems made by Netflix. but majority are cartoons.

15 is nothing tho compared to all of their flops.

if anyone likes cartoons checkout: centaurworld - awesome wrap up on the last episode dogs in space Maya and the three dead end Cuphead over the moon Klaus

It's a game, one I don't play, but if you ruin kid fun of course you'll get eyerolls... regardless of your background.

My recovery is just to own it, and say that I may not believe anymore, but "I'm proud of you sweety for believing". Kids won't take that as condescending cause the notion of Santa disbelievers is built-in.

I think my kid flat out told their friends at pre-school that Santa Clause died. Which lead to some very interesting conversations. We watched the cartoon film Klaus on Netflix (would recommend) and that's how they internalized it. =)
