Ha. Different bug (sentient yogurt cultures) but sort of explored quite amusingly by Love, Death & Robots Season 1 - https://lovedeathrobots.fandom.com/wiki/When_the_Yogurt_Took_Over

there's also that love death robots episode about not allowing people to have kids

400 Boys by Marc Laidlaw was turned into an episode of Love, Death & Robots (volume 4) — released this year on Netflix.

Maybe as an eventually consistent life form using extremely slow message passing. Though gravity becomes a major factor that would limit the size unless it’s incredibly sparse.

One of my favorite episodes of Love, Death, & Robots is “Swarm”. Worth a watch.

I think there's an episode about this in Love+Death+Robots

I wouldn’t say there was no effort. Sony made it the flagship announcement of their summer games presentation, and it apparently has its own dedicated episode in the anthology series by Amazon and the Love Death Robots showrunners coming out in December. They had betas. Even other majorly botched games have had literally orders of magnitude more players at launch. At the time of this announcement, there were 24 total players in the game on Steam, which, assuming all were in a game, is literally only enough to fill two lobbies. It really is an unprecedented failure.

My guess is that the show is their Hail Mary. They are sending out refunds now given the absolutely calamitous release, and are banking that the episode in December will drum up enough interest that if they release it as a free to play game at the same time they might have a better shot at getting some kind of player base.

"Zima Blue," from Netflix's Love, Death & Robots (s1e14), is worth a watch for those interested in the intersection of art and swimming pools. Haunting episode, and one of my favorite from that season.

Also check out the excellent animation of this story in Love, Death & Robots. There's some other good Scalzi stories in there too, and other great stories (don't miss the episode Helping Hand[1] either).

They should turn stories from Love, Death, Robots animated anthology into longer episodes. There were some stories that could do with longer treatment or dive more into the universe. With streaming service, they could have variable length, most being hour long with a few making to movie length.

Reminds me of that one Love, Death + Robots episode, “The Drowned Man.” Worth a watch (both episode and series).

There's a bunch on Netflix right now that I haven't mustered up the interest to watch. "Love, Death & Robots" got a second season, and they also host two different sci-fi horror anthologies for short films from Neill Blomkamp and Guillermo del Toro!

The Umbrella Academy, Love, Death & Robots, Black Mirror (seasons 3–5) and Arcane are also relatively popular shows in the mentioned categories.

    Hello everyone

Are we lone wolves as hackers? We don't think so. While we do good works like everyone else, we would like to share the technical details of these works and follow the works of others like us. We know we are not alone as we work to create great work later in the night, but we also want to see it.

This is exactly the purpose of this site. Creating a hacker group for yourself, sharing your works and following the posts and online/offline status of the people you follow.

Theme: The color and logo on the site are inspired by the episode "Zima Blue" in the TV series Love, Death & Robots.

Rat investigation reminds me of that one Love, Death + Robots episode. Very industrious little guys.

Having recently gone though all of netflix's "Love Death & Robots", it was quite common for me to initially dislike some of the art styles, specially when going from a hyper-realistic episode to something artsy.

By the end of it, that never impacted my enjoyment. The story is always what did it. And I realized later that some stories would have been hard to tell in the realistic setting.

The point being that art and story are intertwined somewhat, I'll reserve judgement till I experience the full thing.

I think Apple is doing a great job, but I also think trusting by default is a mistake. Apple’s leadership might change. In fact, no one can claim to know apple’s long game. You guys should watch Love+Death+Robots, Season 3, the Swarm episode. I think it’s very elucidating.

I am finishing “Love, Death + Robots” on Netflix and between the quality of CGI and things like DALL-E and Imagen, movie, design, and illustration industries are in for an upheaval.

  18. NegativeClaude_ShannonMay 22, 2022

Netflix just has nothing interesting, and you have to sift through endless mediocre movies. Once I'm done with Arcane and then Love, Death & Robots, I'll unsubscribe. Just simply not worth it.

  19. PositiveuxcolumboApr 20, 2022

Can you give some examples of what type of movies to produce?

And what’s wrong with Ozark? I thought it’s one of the better shows on Netflix.

In my view they need more creative risky shows like the OA, Altered Carbon, Love, Death & Robots, Dark Mirror and more old HBO style content… quality and like you said not this mass produced stuff trying to satisfy the lowest common denominator, because then you will satisfy no one.

Maybe they have good shows I just don't know about. Their recommendation system seems to be crap. I browse for 20 minutes and then give up frustrated, because I can't find anything interesting.

I was just looking to downgrade my plan. Basic only gives you SD quality, which I'm OK with but only allowing one device at a time is taking the p!ss.

I'm not entirely convinced of that attitude; plenty of science fiction in a cyberpunk setting have strong underlying messages, of e.g. personal identity, capitalism, privacy, overpopulation, sex work, drugs, classism, AI, environment / global warming, etc; some of the big names there would be (imo, I'm no expert and I can't think of much) Ghost in the Shell, Altered Carbon, The Matrix, some episodes of Love Death & Robots and even Black Mirror, to name a few.

  21. Positivetwox2Jan 4, 2022

I mostly agree, though I think the other movies are fun. But the Animatrix was so ahead of its time. Now Netflix has love, death, & robots - which to me seems directly inspired.

Movies: - 12 angry men - Whiplash - Prestige - American Beauty - The Thing - V for Vendetta - The Grand Budapest Hotel - Gone Girl - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Parasite - ... Tarantino or Scorsese movies

Anime: - Howl's Moving Castle - Spirited Away

Not a movie but both great series: - Love, Death & Robots - Black Mirror

    off topic/fiction

'Pop Squad' is the top rated episode of 'Love, Death & Robots Season 2'[1] in which humans have cracked longevity and so offspring (children) are banned; treated as pests and you can correlate what name 'Pop Squad' refers to. (Warning: Very dark theme).

Some episodes of 'Love Death + Robots' (Netflix) have caused me to double-take as I didn't realise at first they were CGI.

There's a BTS video[1] about the animation on one episode, appears that it was a blend of both CGI + real faces.

Population control. Episode 3, Season 2, "Love, Death & Robots" covers a very similar scenario with Black Mirror-like horror...

Effectively, having "unapproved" children results in the children being executed, the parents gaoled for criminal/mental health issues.

Also unbelievably and unfortunately true. The arrogance of a statement has no bearing on truth. Keep your biases in check and examine the truth behind a statement rather then perceived arrogance. Look at https://www.google.com/.

It looks clean, and nice and well arranged.

Does it look like a work of pure talent and skill and a work of incredible skill and artistry? No. No it does not.

Sure google is probably paying some designer 200k to come up with that front page but seriously let's take a look at it from the perspective of reality. How much effort and talent is required to come up with that search page versus painting a still life painting? Let's face it: Not much talent, and not much effort either.

You can take it a notch up further and talk about complicated interfaces like gmail or outlook. For that I have to say that there's a lot of TIME involved in thinking through the placement and color coding of the interfaces. But is there talent? No. Anybody can spend the time to think about that stuff.

As for painting still life? Or the human figure from thin air? That's raw talent. Not many people can do that no matter how much time you give them. I also bet a good chunk of UI designers don't have the ability to even draw at that level.

Have you seen the netflix show Love, death, robots? The artistry in that show is amazing. I respect the people who work on those episodes. That is an example of modern artistry displaying pure talent and raw skill. UI designers in comparison? Imposters, most of them, and I'm not referring to the syndrome.

Also I'm not the one claiming I'm good at UI design. I'm calling out the imposters. Why don't you show me your portfolio and I'll give you my honest opinion on it. Good UI design is good UI but man you guys are not "artists" to the degree the people on that netflix show are actual artists.

  27. Positivethe_afJul 16, 2021

Apparently more than one "Love, Death + Robots" episode was based on Alastair Reynolds' work. "Beyond the Aquila Rift", for example.

I also spotted references to other scifi authors. There's one episode from the first season that is almost 100% something Bradbury would have written (without me telling you which one, can you guess which episode I'm thinking of? Just to doublecheck my own perception), and of course "Pop Squad" from the second season is based on the short story of the same title by Paolo Bacigalupi (from "Pump Six and Other Stories").

And I'm sure I'm missing many more!

  28. NeutralNikolaNovakFeb 17, 2021

Interesting; I feel it depends on the movie - they have a large portfolio now so some sort of averaging is inevitable.

I feel e.g. Cars franchise has limited vision. They're "allright", but not spectacular. I'm OK never seeing any of them again, even the first one.

On the other hand, I find Monsters Inc. a unique movie with a unique premise, and I can rewatch it regularly - with or without the kids 0:-). I also don't find it particularly sad. Inside out does indeed have a large dose of melancholy, but again I feel is a unique idea taken quite far without dilution.

(there are absolutely movies that are way more avant garde or quirky or surreal or even "creative" inasmuch as that can be objectively compared - but Pixar has two distinct audiences to cater to and they HAVE to be entertaining and attention-occupying to children; while inserting content that also keeps adults interested and even thoughtful - that's a specific set of constraints that e.g. "Love Death + Robots" does not have)

And if we look at their entire portfolio, the Pixar Shorts again have some absolutely brilliant, touching, "single idea executed to perfection" entries.

You mean "Love, Death & Robots", episode "Blind Spot"?

  31. PositiveHammershaftJan 15, 2020

I would say already that the most creative minds of younger generations are almost entirely moving to the indie and middle market games industry.

In 2019 I played new titles like Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium, Baba is You & Ape Out. I'm about to start playing Heavens Vault & Caves of Qud

In comparison, I cannot think of a single tv show or movie that I found to be as innovative, original, or interesting as any of those titles. Movies just had one of the least original and most derivative decades in its history, with funding towards endless superhero sequels crowding out the development of new ips. Tv had a better year than movies but I still can't shake the feeling that I saw nothing as innovative or memorable as I had seen in the video game space, with maybe the exception of Love Death Robots.

I think its near impossible to meaningfully discuss which genres have produced art or not without thuroughly defining the word. I would ask this though: have games shown themselves capable of producing the range of experiences that tv & movies can produce?

I would argue that not only is the answer unambiguously yes, but that on the flipside games have shown themselves capable of producing experiences that have no analouge in movies or tv. I haven't seen any show that has given me the sense of epiphany I got from discovering the hidden mechanics of the witness, or the level of intellectual engagement I have gotten from Spacechem, or the level of flow I have felt playing arena shooters and platformers.

The recent renaissance in Chinese (and Chinese-American) Science Fiction has been incredible, and as the article mentions, much of this work is a tool of "subtle dissent". I've been surprised as to how much Mainland authors have been "getting away" with. An excellent example is Hao Jingfang's "Folding Beijing", which is a wonderful critique of contemporary (Chinese) society. Ken Liu's translation is freely available here: https://uncannymagazine.com/article/folding-beijing-2/

Translating monumental works like The Wandering Earth or even the full trilogy of the Three-Body Problem to the screen is already a tremendously challenging undertaking. Adding on top of that institutional problems within the Chinese film industry, the desire to cash in and popularize these works with spectacular but superficial treatments (e.g. "The Wandering Earth" movie), and the heightened level of censorship that movies must undergo, and I don't have much hope for film adaptations of these books.

The best Chinese/Chinese-American production I've seen of late is the "Good Hunting" episode of "Love, Death & Robots" on Netflix, based on the short story of the same name by Ken Liu. Although the story is in part anti-colonial, I seriously doubt the story would have survived intact and be as well made if it were made in the Mainland. Disney values their family friendly image too much. Which is why they'll only ever produce safe boring stuff that doesn't take any risks. So you get these kid-friendly superhero and Star Wars movies, which are popular right now, but surely at some point an adult audience would want more? Especially when they're watching it in the privacy of their own room. Looking at Netflix originals (even if they're not very good), I can't see Disney making something like Narcos, 13 reasons why, Devilman, Love Death & Robots, hell even something like Sabrina (Satanic imagery) or She-Ra (gay stuff). Seriously, what shows in [1] excluding "Children and family" section can you see being streamed on Disney+?

Interesting as I just watched last night on Netflix, “Love, Death & Robots Episode 14: Zima Blue” which is a story very similar to the robot from the article.
