A frustration I have about the current crop of shows and movies generally, but with exceptions, is that so often things seem to just largely happen for no reason other than the writer thought it would be fun/interesting. They lack causality, and I find it so boring.

Instead of "this is happening because this happened," I feel like a lot of modern media is just "this happened and then this happened".

It's the Minions formula, and it's showing up everywhere.

Love or hate the Minions movies, Illumination has been printing money hand over first for years now.

Individual labs somehow manage to do that and we're all grateful. Martin Steinegger's lab put out ColabFold, RELION is the gold standard for cryo-EM despite being academic software and the development of more recent industry competitors like cryoSPARC. Everything out of the IPD is free for academic use. Someone has to fight like hell to get all those grants, though, and from a societal perspective, it's basically needlessly redundant work.

My frustrations aren't with a lack of open source models, some poor souls make them. My disagreement is with the perception that academia has insufficient incentive to work on socially important problems. Most such problems are ONLY worked on in academia until they near the finish line. Look at Omar Yaghi's lab's work on COFs and MOFs for carbon/emission sequestration and atmospheric water harvesting. Look at all the thankless work numerous labs did on CRISPR-Cas9 before the Broad Institute even touched it. Look at Jinbo Xu's work, on David Baker's lab's and the IPD's work, etc. Look at what labs first solved critical amyloid structures, infuriatingly recently, considering the massive negative social impacts of neurodegenerative diseases.

It's only rational for companies that only care about their own profit maximization to socialize R&D costs and privatize any possible gains. This can work if companies aren't being run by absolute ghouls who aren't delaying the release of a new generation of drugs to minimize patent duration overlap or who aren't trying to push things that don't work for short-term profit. This can also work if we properly fund and credit publicly funded academic labs. This is not what's happening, however, instead public funded research is increasingly demeaned, defunded, and dismantled due to the false impression that nothing socially valuable gets done without a profit motive. It's okay, though, I guess under this kind of LSC worldview, that everything always corrects itself so preempting problems doesn't matter, we'll finally learn how much actual innovation is publicly funded when we get the Minions movie, aducanumab, and WeWork over and over again for a few decades while strangling the last bit of nature we have left.

Minions is damn close, however. Freaking billion dollar movies and infinite numbers of the yellow dudes everywhere.

I don't know what the "Top 10 Movies" are.. Is this just, like, box office sales? How could one even judge one set of ten movies against another?

If the problem is simply, "I have to look too hard to find good things," or "ugh, they are making another Minions movie," then, congratulations, you are a hipster. But that's not really a problem, you just have good taste!

The arrs are sweet. Plex serves media. Prowlarr maintains a list of torrent sites to use. Radarr for movies, sonarr for tv, and lidarr for music monitor things and auto download, move, rename, etc., and are tied into prowlarr for where to get them. Some examples, every new Minions movie or every new episode of The Witcher or every new album from IVE you can have auto download once available and get moved to the correct Plex library folder with the correct filename, and you can set up metadata requirements like size, bitrate, etc. for those the downloads. Overseerr has a slick ui for discovering media and requesting downloads; you can have it set up to use plex accounts where you or other users logged in with their plex account can request something, and it reaches out to the correct arr for that to do its thing according to the *arr settings for that media.

What's everything is set up, imagine a Netflix where you can also request something not available and get that added in the time it takes to download in the exact resolution, language, subs, etc., that you want with no more than a search and a click.

I mean if your SO will only watch “Minions” straight to video movies then maybe you just need to find one of the other million activities out there to do together.

Getting a "perfect name" is a lost cause. I named a software project 'minion'. It was perfect, we were top on Google, the only other thing with the name was a font.

Then the movie dispicable me came out, then the Minions movie, and now we are off on page 11.

My nephew was at one stage really into "The minions" movie. To be honest, I can quite enjoy movies like that myself (same for the other disney / pixar bunch).

The only downside was that he for some reason really liked it if I sat next to him watching it, but I don't have the ability to rewatch them countless times :P

Still, kids definitely get hooked on stuff and stick with it through countless repititions.

    Except it mostly doesn't work.

My dashboard has recommended Minions "because you watched The Thick Of It". Out of the whole list, only Yes Prime Minister comes close, and even at that it misses the (more) obvious Yes Minister series.

It's not abandoned, lots of DVDs and Blu-Rays still come with an ultraviolet code, I bought "Minions" last week and it came with one.

But AFAICT it's a service reliant on an approved player for your system/device, and reliant on servers still working. So while it, on the surface, seems like the movie industry giving you options, it's really just yet more DRM.

It's amusing how our mental model of people has become: anything potentially internally upsetting to a person will psychologically destroy them forever. Therefore, you must never say anything anybody (globally) could possibly have a negative reaction towards.

Being sensitive and aware of others needs is great, but being punished because Joe cries when he hears the word Soufflé, and you didn't know that fact, is weird. On the other hand, once you know Joe is sensitive to the S word, and you continue harassing Joe with a daily Soufflé, then you are an asshat.

Our future is on a trajectory to just be like the minions movie. The only word allowed will be banana, in deference to maintaining the internal psychological purity of all sentient humans.
