Justwatch.com is great for checking if a movie or show is available on any of your streaming services (also handy for keeping a cross-service watchlist that will notify you when something becomes available). No relation, just a happy user.

No, let's be honest, rich West won't go into (nuclear) war with Russia over poor Ukraine which does not have gas/oil (see previous US invasions) and is neither NATO/EU member. As it was proven numerous times West can't agree even on strict sanctions, so to think they would do anything which could potentially lead to direct war with Russia is pure sci-fi. They would Putin take whole Ukraine, Moldova and other former soviet (non NATO) countries before antyhing close to war would happen, there is still plenty of countries to take before stakes are higher.

I highly recommend watching Norwegian TV show Occupied which I finished just days ago (3rd season not worth anymore), which describes pretty accurately European politics and what would happen if Russians "attacked" rich country.

But yeah, as fan of Threads (1984) I thought about nearest shelter, whether I would risk our own building nuclear shelter which is quite deep or try somehow put whole family in our small basement (I think no direct window outside) or hide in our top floor concrete apartment in case of attack, but in the end especially in case of nuclear attack seems quite pointless trying to hide from it. I wish I would have basement as my father (living in west of Slovakia) which is pretty huge like living room in building with 50+ cm thick walls, so all you need to do is cover the windows.

Norway halting production for ecological reasons is the start of a fascinating plot in the Occupied TV series. It's got its moments.

One point I haven't seen brought up yet is the amount of interaction and forum type communications that happen in modern games within the context of CCPs wanting to control all online speech.

The TV show Occupied (norway Okkupert) has a fun example where a militarized group uses video game live audio chat to secretly communicate and pass info.

I think there are memes about COD waiting rooms too illustrating digital forums of speech, even the most dumb teenager smack talk you can think of!

And that seems scary to CCP.

came here to post https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupied :)

Occupied (Norwegian: Okkupert) is a Norwegian political thriller TV series that depicts a fictional near future in which, due to catastrophic environmental events, Norway's Prime Minister has stopped the country's oil and gas production.

Russia, with support from the European Union, occupies Norway to restore its oil and gas production, in response to a Europe-wide energy crisis.

Hm. Late to the party, nevertheless I can't resist to give my two cents to the phenomenon which is btw. not even new, or limited to Netflix.

First I didn't grow up with much TV, because there were many more interesting things to do as a child, like playing in the forest. Later on I haven't been a fan either, and finally discarded my TV in 1996 and went into cinema instead. But again, not that much.

For a time I substituted that with a Hauppauge WinTV in one of my PCI-slots, and had the surreal experience to watch the second plane crash into the Twin Towers in NYC live on CNN after IRC exploded with: "TURN ON CNN NOW!1!!". Removed the card maybe a few weeks after that, because TV became toxic then, as in News are bad for you, and wasn't worth the energy anymore.

Did a strict media diet for a few years then, until I couldn't resist because of Battlestar Galactica, and got lost into Lost :)

From then on I partially catched up, but still very selective.

Anyways, what follows is an incomplete list of things which either never made it further than the pilot, or got canceled mid-season, or could have been longer IMO.

Earliest thing which comes to mind are several attempts from Gene Roddenberry with

Netflix is musty, as someone said to me. After overthinking, musty indeed is the best term for most of Netflix.

Last movie I saw and liked at Netflix was The two popes. Netflix doesn't carry top series like

    - Exit https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9612102/

    - Le bureau des légendes https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4063800/

    - Okkupert EDIT was/is available https://www.netflix.com/title/80092654

In the US & Canada Netflix has Babylon Berlin https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4378376/ but IMHO it is not up to above three.

Looking forward to be able to watch hbo-europe.com documentaries like

    - The Other Side of Everything https://www.othersideofeverything.com/

    - Lessons of Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM-wAlSFHZQ

And on the other side you have Occupied, a really good TV series where Norway stops to produce oil and the Russians starts an invasion of them with support from the EU. When I think about a country invading another for oil, there's always a name that comes to my mind, and it's not the one that appears on the series.

The reason is not that much about nationalism or soft-power. Filmmakers want to make money, and when you have a big enough consumer market filmmakers avoid controversial topics to get a chance to capture it.

There's a Netflix series called Occupied based on the premise that Norway stopped producing oil & gas for environmental reasons. I watched a few episodes before getting distracted, as you do with Netflix.

"Occupied depicts a fictional near future in which Russia, with support from the European Union, occupies Norway to restore its oil and gas production, in response to a Europe-wide energy crisis caused by the coming to power of Norway's Green Party, which stopped the country's oil and gas production." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupied

By coincidence, I recently watched the first episode of a TV show where Norway's oil resources contribute to a different kind of trouble.

You may be interested in the Norwegian TV series "Occcupied":

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okkupert

The premise is that Norway develops thorium reactor technology and ceases all fossil-fuel production. And then is clandestinely and later openly invaded by Russia, with the blessing of other countries, to seize oil and gas production facilities and forcibly re-open them.

I don't perceive anything we've said here as particularly political? (Other than the obvious: arguments for and against anarchism, which is a political concept but doesn't field any candidates.) But since you raise the issue...

One wouldn't expect anyone from Finland, Switzerland, etc. to complain too much about the government. For the time being, these nations have "good" governments. Voters have some effect on national policies, police aren't slaughtering innocents with impunity at home, military isn't doing the same in numerous locations abroad. Please have some sympathy for the majority of humanity! You'll turn into us before we turn into you, if for no other reason than by a reversion to the mean. After all we export our delusions. Some people have seen enough American news to believe that it's an advantage to be on our "side" in an armed conflict.

I have really enjoyed the TV series "Okkupert", and I do sympathize with any nation that borders a schizophrenic totalizing militarist kleptocracy, because the in the long term there will be violence. That's why I sympathize with Mexico.

    > If we didn't do that, we'd be completely inundated with American shows flogged off on the cheap

Absolutely. I deleted it from my post, but I was going to mention that on non-primary Australian TV stations that don't have the same content restrictions, we get 2 hours of non-stop Big Bang Theory reruns, or endless repeats of Frasier, Sex And The City, Charmed & Becker.

    > What kind of tv show do you consider 'culturally significant'?

Glitch is my favorite recent Australian TV show, started on ABC but apparently Season 2 has been sold as a Netflix exclusive. Back in the 90s it would have been shows like Seachange, Frontline, Kath & Kim. Maybe Offspring & Packed To The Rafters are recent equivalents.

(Outside Australia, I'd think of shows like The Bridge, Springfloden, The Killing & Occupied, that have exported Scandinavian culture onto Australian TV.)

Off topic: Anyone watch Okkupert (occupied in English)? The French-Norwegian made drama about how a modern European country would act if war were to happen there today (like it kind of has in Ukraine...).

Both the British and (especially) German [0] media are virulently anti-Russian. They blame Russians for all of their ills. Societal problems? Blame Russians. Anything that happens in their countries, they manage to find an angle to blame it on Russians somehow. Norway [1] & Sweden are also under a constant paranoia that Russians are just days away from invading them.

But nothing compares to German media when it comes to paranoia about Russians. They're truly in the league of their own. They have tabloids like BILD that devote several pages of every issue on "evil russians". They even print special issues about evil Russians and new Hitler aka Putin.

When I visited Germany last year, I felt like they're in a second Cold War or something. In the US, we managed to stop being paranoid after 1990s but Germans are still paranoid about Russians. It was explained to me by a german friend of mine that this is because their biggest publisher, Axel Springer, was started with CIA money and that every journalist who works for any of the Axel Springer properties has to sign a contract that says that they have to foster the relationship with the US. Unsaid rule is that they have to disparage Russians. And sure enough, if you search for some of this stuff, you can find things like [2] and [3]

    http://russia-insider.com/en/groundhog-day-german-msm-keeps-repeating-anti-putin-propoganda/ri12042

Edit #2 : I see my comment is controversial and is being heavily down/upvoted with downvotes winning.

Anyway, to add even more evidence to what I'm saying, see the Twitter feed [4] of Julian Röpcke, who's a 'political editor at BILD'. Go take a look for yourself and start scrolling. Everything that happens in the world, Russians are somehow behind it according to him. Millions of refugees from Syria in Europe? That's because of Russians and Putin (never mind the fact that millions arrived way before Russians started their deployment in Syria). I guess he cannot mention that unrest started after US implemented a policy of destabilizing Assad and funding of various islamic terror organization... because that would be against his pro-US "jounalistic" contract that he signed.
