I find that religion adds an interesting dimension to space sci-fi - Dune, The Expanse, and even some of the Riddick movies feature religion in varying degrees.
This is a great question. The answer imho is that large creators can use crowd sourcing and leverage their reputation.
All they have to do is ask the public for money to make the next [say] Mad Max, Riddick, Startrek, Batman, etc etc
If the public doesn't want a new Startrek movie funding will be insufficient. It might have to happen on a smaller budget, not at all or simply have to wait until funds are sufficient.
New things (not sequels) can be done/advertised on the reputation of the studio, director, actors etc etc
I pay for production, I pay in advance for a cinema ticket, I get a digital download some months later.
Whatever copying happens after that is pure promotion.
I was going to say these reminded me of that Space Wreck book series - wish they would go back into publication, they were really popular during their run but unfortunately the kind of books that got passed around a lot and acquired a lot of wear, so it’s hard to find them in good condition.
One of the things I really enjoyed about the Riddick movies was the alien planets actually looking alien instead of like Canadian forestland. (Or gravel pits if you remember ‘70s Dr Who episodes).
Going to repeat a lot of what has been said so far:
- Minority Report (The TV show isn't bad either)
- Ex Machina
- District 9
- Elysium
- Oblivion
- Edge of Tomorrow
- Looper
- I am Legend
- Her
- The Martian
- The Matrix (Only 2 & 3 if you're super bored)
- Basically any of the Mad Max series
- Firefly (TV show, movies are OK)
- Dark Matter (TV show)
- Snow Piercer
- American Ultra
- Last Witch Hunter (more fantasy than SciFi)
- Riddick
- Dredd
- X Files (I mean, it's not NOT scifi...)
- Treasure Planet (Yes, the animated one)
- Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Gets a bad rap for being animated, but it has it's own language and everything)
- Serial Lain Experiments (anime)
- Watchmen
- The Dark Knight
- Inception
- The Prestige (technically SciFi)
I can go on for hours
Watched Riddick in cinema last night and there was an ads for Grand Theft Auto V. It is rare to see computer game ads in theatre.
