Most broadcast TV shows, with the commercials removed, are about 21-22 minutes long. Those are usually my go-to for lunch. I tend to re-watch series as well, so I don’t have to pay too close attention.
I’m currently re-watching Schitt’s Creek, but others I’ve enjoyed are Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, King of the Hill, The League, Scrubs, Workaholics.
I don't really get what this means. A false positive causes issues inherently - you don't know if it's right or wrong. It's noise which is bad for care, and it's anxiety-inducing for patients which is also bad. It produces worse outcomes for everyone. There isn't a "choice" or assumption here, you respond to a positive as if it's accurate until you know it isn't. This is a known issue. Hell Scrubs did an episode about the negative impact of full, generalized body scans on a patient's wellbeing decades ago.
>and we found that there are entire audio tracks missing in multiple episodes
Personally for me the worst case of this is Scrubs. The soundtrack of the show is so incredibly crucial to its atmosphere. There's a scene with the Coral's Dreaming of You that they've replaced with some awful generic track in the streaming versions. That people see the show now and maybe don't even know it is just a crime.
My friend Alex Repty and I made this story game about pull requests and collaborative software dev. It's meant to be a little absurd while playing on current trends. The theme was inspired by the TV show Scrubs, and the movies Office Space and Dogma.
You play a frontend developer trying to get a reasonable PR merged from your colleague who owns the codebase. There are seven possible endings, and a playthrough takes about 5–10 minutes. No signup required.
Alex came up with the original story idea and I built the game using a JS port of Ink https://www.inklestudios.com/ink/ and a custom React frontend based on a template I'd previously created for another project, then added the UI. Writer/editor Erik Barnes then helped polish the story, and then I added multimedia to round it off.
We used a state variable called "tension" that built up with the choices made. In testing though, we recognized we should probably adjust the total tension calculation in the final scene so players would be judged overall on their later choices than earlier ones.
If you give it a try, I'd love to hear which ending you got. Cheers.
You know when something doesn't annoy you until someone points it out?
It's so obvious in hindsight. Shows like the Big Bang theory, House and Scrubs I very rarely caught two episodes consecutively (and when I did they were on some release schedule so you'd forgotten half of the plot by next week). But they are all practically self contained with only the thread of a longer term narrative being woven between them.
It's doubtful that any of these netflix series you could catch one random episode and feel comfortable that you understand what's going on. Perhaps worse is the recent trend for mini-series which are almost exactly how you describe - just a film without half of it being left on the cutting room floor.
Another random band I was listening to because of MP3.com was Lazlo Bane which is best known because one of their songs "Superman" (which was on MP3.com) became the Scrubs TV show theme song.
MP3.com also had a bunch of very early meme bands such as The Laziest Men on Mars with songs based on "All Your Base Are Belong to Us" and "The Terrible Secret of Space" which were viral and hard to escape in certain friend groups.
Because most of the music was free to download and a lot of it was pretty viral, I'd maybe add a Spotify if it was Legal Napster analogy to the Bandcamp and Soundcloud put together analogy.
A couple I can remember off the top of my head, since I can't check my server right now. Scrubs with original music, since they didn't have the license for the original songs for streaming (or the DVDs, I can't remember). Daria with the original music for the same reason. I can't think of any fan visual remasters of tv shows though.
The TV series Scrubs was hit really hard by this — The soundtrack and sound-design in that show really drove home the emotion in the episodes, and when replaced, it really doesn't hit the same mark.
Keep in mind that even in the excellent documentary to which you refer, about Dr Hugh "House" Laurie, MD. PhD. McT., the premise is that his setup - a dedicated diagnostics team to focus on difficult to diagnose cases - is a rare concept, not something seen at most US hospitals. There wasn't, for example, a similar team in that other great documentary "Scrubs".
I have been threatening to do this for a while just put all of my dvd rips on a server on make channels based on genera scifi (star trek stargate etc) cartoon (loony toons popeye...) sitcoms (scrubs HowIMetYourMother Frasier Cheer) all of my kids horrible shows on another. i often find i end up flipping thorugh netflix with option paralysis when i mostly want background noise this would be nice.
My golden hallucination tests for chatgpt are identification of Simpsons season and episode based on description of some plot lines or general0 descriptions.
I had to refresh my knowledge base visiting fandom websites to review the episode selected as answer as chatgpt tendency to mix things up and provide entirely made up episodes make it hard for bar trivias (and makes me doubt myself too). The same with other tv series such as House MD and Scrubs.
For those who watch medical shows, this is somewhat reminiscent of a case of several patients who contracted rabies through organ transplants - a story that was portrayed in Scrubs season 5 episode 20, "My Lunch".
I started AI upscaling and extending Star Trek DS9 and Scrubs to 16:9 Full HD it's mostly custom diffuser models and custom gans for upscaling. There a tons of edge cases so you need to fiddle a bit but it works better than expected. I am at 2-3 Episodes per week with 4-6 hours of work. I also started gaussian splatting environments from TNG for use in unreal it's fun :)
Wait, is Continuing Professional Development not mandatory for medics in your country? That's crazy. Like, that's so obviously necessary there was a Scrubs episode about it.
You definitely shouldn't have medics who are relying on long obsolete practices and just incrementally learning via the grapevine, get some regulations. It's bad enough that so many countries don't require CPD for software engineering. I don't care that you've been copying the source code into a dated folder every day since 1987, it's 2024 and you need an actual Revision Control System.
Scrubs is a funny one. It's both disaster and transcendent. Everything about Season 9 is garbage, but up to that point it was a fantastic show. And Season 8 has an incredibly well-done, moving, funny finale. I highly recommend anyone watching this show for the first time simply stop at the end of Season 8.
I really enjoyed this, well done. I love that there were surprises like the LOST finale not being as bad as you thought (statistically).
Some obligatory personal hot takes:
- the Scrubs finale should be considered the last episode of season 8 (which was great). Season 9 should be considered a spinoff series.
- The Blacklist recently aired the series finale and I would consider it a disaster finale. It has ruined the series for me, and I no longer recommend it to friends.
- I think most comedies aren’t ruined by a series finale. That’s probably due to the character over plot idea, as there usually isn’t a storyline I’m dying to finish.
I'd expect a lot of interjections (yeahs, okays, ums, rights, etc) in normal conversation, but people don't keep repeating back everything that's said for the "benefit" of an audience. Not in my experience anyway, although I suppose there are probably some people who do... maybe as a vocal tic or something. You'd get none of the pauses for sound effects or music in normal speech either. The podcast comes off as being very "produced" as opposed to having a natural conversational tone, and some people love that aspect, but the low information density is what gets to me the most.
I mean, here's an except from another transcript and even ignoring that they're using a ton of sound clips to explain something simple, the amount of repetition would be insane in a normal conversation:
(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Grief often comes in five stages. RACHAEL CUSICK: I'm not sure when or how exactly I came across it, but... (SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "SCRUBS") DAVE FOLEY: (As Lester Hedrick) You're going to go through what we call the five stages of grief. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Five stages of grief. RACHAEL CUSICK: It was this five-part checklist. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: There are five stages of grief. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: What are you talking about? RACHAEL CUSICK: You might have heard of these stages. The idea is pretty simple. It's basically that in the wake of losing a loved one, you'll go through a series of feelings. (SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC) RACHAEL CUSICK: First... (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Stage one. (SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "SCRUBS") DAVE FOLEY: (As Lester Hedrick) Denial. RACHAEL CUSICK: Denial. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Denial. RACHAEL CUSICK: Then stage two. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Step two, that's anger. (SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "SCRUBS") DAVE FOLEY: (As Lester Hedrick) Anger. RACHAEL CUSICK: Then bargaining. (SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "SCRUBS") DAVE FOLEY: (As Lester Hedrick) Bargaining. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: OK. RACHAEL CUSICK: After that is... (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Depression. RACHAEL CUSICK: ...Depression and... (SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "SCRUBS") DAVE FOLEY: (As Lester Hedrick) Finally, acceptance. RACHAEL CUSICK: ...Last but not least, acceptance.
I will admit it is not a perfect match, but both have a laugh track and both remain very popular. I think I may have been trying to get an agreement from several generations of sitcom enthusiasts.
How about Big Bang and Scrubs? Both are kinda silly and both kinda got bad the same way.
I don’t think so, to be honest. The landscape for media consumption is so much different than 10-15 years ago. Without any supporting data, I have a hunch that, shows are mostly watched within a year of its original air date. New shows aren’t on a rerun (I recall Scrubs, House being on from time to time), they are not turning into a comfort background tv show (like The Office, Friends) or have a religious fanbase that’ll just follow along because there are 20 seasons of it (NCIS, Greys Anatomy and so on.).
On top of everything, media is extremely fragmented. So much choice that there isn’t any specific shows that people watch because everyone else is watching and will talk about it on Monday during lunch (a la Game of Thrones). So all these companies are left with churning new shows trying to find a holy grail of the Stranger Things size to bring them new subscribers. Until then, anything that doesn’t stick on the wall, will get cut off.
We have a huge movie industry scene in my city, so you hear from people who jump from working show A to show B. None of the shows I’ve ever heard of and never will. But producers are still hoping for a genre defining hit somehow.
But what if it really sucks? There are bands who are "one hit wonders" not because of peoples attention spans but because the rest of their songs actually suck. Detective book series, where the supposed detective starts solving crimes by using astrology? Yeah... no, thank you. Scrubs season 9? The last few seasons of house of cards?
It sucks, there are many other things to read/watch/play, so why not quit the bad stuff and find something better?
I don't think anyone's queuing up for shows, but it doesn't hold the same cultural history, so the sensitivity and care is much less. Blackface as a subject (e.g the episode of Scrubs where it's just a funny bit) doesn't spark any debate, removal or cancellation. It's seen in context.
You might need to go to DVD for something that old.
There are advantages to getting owned DVDs, like the fact that they can't mess with the content later. Music licensing problems are fairly common. For Scrubs Season 1 in particular, they had to change all the music around for Netflix's streamed version. The DVD version, as far as I know, has the original music.
Sometimes I put on a TV show I’ve already seen playing in the background to help me focus. Something easy like Scrubs or How I Met Your Mother, where you really don’t need effort to keep track. It can play in the background for the whole day and it somehow helps me get in the zone, but not always.
> only person that likes doing that stuff... leads to episodes like this
This reminds me of an episode in Scrubs where one of the residents volunteers to announce bad news to patients or family [1].
Several patients later, the lead doc tells them, "... if you could stop worrying so much about who does and doesn't notice... you. Even for a second... that'd be good; that'd be real good."
Their plaintive explanation previously was, "I just wanted to be colleagues."
It wouldn't surprise me volunteers pick up diplomatic work, and it just doesn't jive like a computer program at all. With humans, who knows what we are getting into?
Should we have goals up-front before we dive into open-source? Whether it's for respect and recognition, or a completely selfless quest for the good of a project we care about, or something else.
Maybe we just love to write code; the project is cool; and we just want to be involved.
I guess we have to be ready when the system does not behave like we expect, and we can't QA behavior or choices. That's the hard part of soft skills.
This really bothered me about censoring the Scrubs episode with blackface. Not that I think the joke was funny or good or needed to be preserved, but they censored it for the wrong reason.
The joke: Turk and JD go to a college party dressed as each other, in whiteface and blackface respectively. Turk gets distracted and leaves just as JD opens the door to an all-black frat. The frat beats the shit out of JD for his blackface.
It wasn't the blackface that made the joke racist, in my opinion. It was the tired stereotype of violent black men without deeper emotions. It was the assumption that racism is transactional in this way; you do a racism and you get your ass beat if you get caught.
There's a similar issue in medical imaging, when oriented with the patient "facing you". Then my left is patient right and vice versa.
This is why in the days of processed x-ray films, TV shows would more commonly hang a chest x-ray incorrectly[1], with the (patient's) "left" label on the left instead of the right. It's less common now that the example imaging is digital.
My theory is that it isn't just music - what people often prefer in most categories is the "familiar". When you're young, it's all new so we explore, but after a while we gravitate towards things that are like things we already know.
Having said that, what saved me from being stuck in the 80's was almost single-handedly Scrubs, the sitcom. Joshua Radin, Jon Mclaughlin, Colin Hay (re-introduction), Matt Nathanson. Wish I could find another source as good as that again.
Very partial list of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar movie/TV roles or cameos:
* Airplane
* Fletch
* Uncle Buck
* A movie called "Matrix" that seems to be unrelated to "The Matrix"
* The Critic (yes, the animated one)
* Scrubs
* Simpsons
* Dave (recent TV show not movie)
* Glass Onion
Also wrote at least on Episode of Veronica Mars.
This seems like a MUCH more fun sports retirement than just flying to golf destinations and chugging champagne... (not to mention his extensive philanthropy and personal writing)
They also have a tendency to edit, remove episodes, etc. And it does not even need to be for political correctness either. It could be licensing rights to music in shows. They will sometimes edit a show to remove the music or remove the episode altogether. (This happened with Scrubs.)
They will remove content that involves people talking about suicide. They will remove content that is offensive. They have even gone back and edited previous episodes and content. This has happened in Stranger Things (actual edits with no notice) and Arrested Development (a redesign of the fourth season that is far worse than the original version of it). (I could not watch the fifth season. It was way too terrible.)
Here's a gem: While a multi billion dollar implosion is being investigated, potentially hundreds of years of jail time being handed out, millions of victims. Self-disappearing messages and basically no documentation, he just got caught admitting to co-mingling funds on tape, and getting dragged in front of congress, SBF is bothering the Chapter11 team to give him the password to his linkedin account.
You linkedin account? It's like the end of the (excellent) Scrubs episode "My Screwup": "Where do you think we are?".
One of us is not understanding the situation, and I don't think it's the grownups.
I'm not familiar with the literature but I was rewatching Scrubs recently which is a 10-20 y/o show and it was mentioned in an episode that you could tell a lot about a person's health by looking at their stool, even made a joke about a "Doctor Toilet", a smart toilet that analyzes your stool
For what its worth, Scrubs did put a real number in one of their episodes. They had a real phone that went around being answered by cast & crew and everyone had a blast. They remember it quite fondly.
I am hoarding DVDs and it's because a.) it's cheap, b.) it's reliable c.) it's future-proof and d.) I don't trust tomorrow's political/cultural landscape to not disappear things down the memory hole as well as subtly editing out offensive material or otherwise altering things in hard to detect ways. Case in point, not long ago a family member witnessed "Scrubs" being scrubbed of a particularly offensive joke that ran afoul of today's censors. With streaming, you have absolutely no control over what version of a movie you're seeing. What are you going to do? Store the bits and compare it to your neighbors'? That right there is a crime.
Shazam is one of the very few apps in the past 20 years that STILL "wows" me. I have no idea how the tech works, and I even sort of like not knowing, to be honest. It's one of the very few apps out there that still in exist in a "magical" way to me. I am constantly impressed with how fast/easy it works, even with very obscure music. What an amazing app.
Fun quick related story, about 10 or more years ago there was a back tracking song on a TV show (Scrubs) that I really liked that was only in the Netflix version. It was just an instrumental song with some French sounding words speaking in it so there was no easy way to search for it. However, it was distinct enough that it didn't seem like something made just for the show. It was also pretty quiet and under some talking in the tv show scene. I had posted on reddit asking if anyone knew it, and never got any responses. I searched all over the web, but no source had the track details. It drove me crazy every time I would hear the song in re-watching the show, and I still could not track it down every few years when I tried again. Back then, Shazam had no cataloging of it so it wasn't in there either yet. However, when re-watching it a few years back again, I tried Shazam again and to my surprise it finally worked. I was blown away that Shazam was finally able to solve this 10+ year mystery. It was one of the coolest feelings every to scratch that itch finding this rare French song and hearing it in full. It was truly magical.
EDIT: Oh sorry, I didn't think anyone would actually care about the song itself lol It was called "Sans Hésitation" by the French-Canadian band "Chapeaumelon". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju4d3YQhByU - It's also interesting cause now the song does in the episode in tv music database sites. Very cool.
Most "tech" shows or hacker scenes are akin to the police procedurals, courtroom dramas, and medical shows that generally don't bear much relationship with what it's like day-to-day for cops, lawyers, or hospital workers. (Hence shows/films like The Wire and Reno 911, My Cousin Vinny and Suits, St. Elsewhere and Scrubs stand out.)
As a founder of a venture-backed startup with first-to-market tech that went through an accelerator in Palo Alto in the 2010s, Silicon Valley is basically entirely accurate. Actually tamer and more restrained than reality in many regards, at least anecdotally.
Surprisingly, Zack Braff is actually a very, very funny physical comedian. I was watching some episodes of scrubs last week and it’s surprising how much he leans on physical comedy.
Almost all the shows i watch over and over and again are ones with 7+ seasons,
90's star trek (tng ds9 voy) all 7 seasons, MAS*H 12 seasons, Frasier 11 season, Scrubs 8 season (I skip season 9 and refuse to acknowledge its existance), Red Dwarf 8 season (+ more after the revival decades later), X-Files 11 seasons, How I Met Your Mother 9 seasons, Freinds 10 seasons, Stargate SG1 10 seasons, three seasons is to little to grow a fallowing and not enough for you to rewatch
My parents are both doctors. When I was a child they bought some VHS tapes (that was the 90s) cartoons documentaries for children about the human body covering also the reproductive system.
When my partner was pregnant we told explicitly to our 2yo daughter that there was a baby in mom's belly.
When the baby was born we told her we went to the hospital and the baby came out of mom's zezette/vagina (zezette is the french word for kids to call vaginas).
I understand that the sex part and human psychology might be harder to explain but you can definitely explain the mechanical part.
Sex have a lot of taboos and emotions attached to it but you can describe it to a child without those parts taking a medical/anatomic perspective.
As they say in the Scrubs tv show:
"Maybe the dirty little secret about sex is that it isn't so dirty after all"
I'd recommend watching Scrubs if you think surgeons are perceived as the intellectuals in medicine. Or watch a talk about Egyptology by literal brain surgeon Ben Carson.
But it isn't a creative work. It is an adopted symbol more akin to a national flag or religious structure. The laws that protect it from violence trump things like freedom of speech. Use of it in a game, a situation where people can simulate the misuse of that symbol, reduce its realworld significance.
Prison Architect actually received a notice about this. Their answer was very simple: replace the red cross with a green one. There is no reason other games cannot also make this very minor concession to the Geneva Conventions. It is the law.
Look to TV shows. It is very very rare to see an actual red cross. Ambulances on shows like Scrubs don't use them. Film/TV people know to respect that symbol and only use it in very specific scenarios. MASH used it extensively, but then too very carefully.
I have stopped watching German dubs long ago, but I watched a lot of the German dub of Scrubs during its original run, and much later came across the original English version. It's incredibly striking how the dubbing changed the character of Dr Cox: In the German dub, he's portrayed in a high-pitched voice, rendering him a maniacal goofball, whereas McGinley's original performance uses a deeper flatter voice that made him appear much more psychopathic (though admittedly I only saw one episode in English, so that may be cherry-picking).
I know with my family we aren't
My parent may for netflix
My sister pays for HBO
My wife and I pay for Disney/Hulu (also espn came in the bundle but none of us watch sports but there wasn't a option to not get it)
we all share accounts and each have our profile.
We each have our own amazon prime account but that's more for shipping, with the streaming as a nice bonus.
I will get a free trail to other services and cancel them after i finish what ever show i wanted i couldn't get on the other pay services. which reminds me i need to sign up for a free paramount+ trial for the next batch of star trek seasons.
then there are all of the free streaming services that are ad supported (pluto IMDBtv etc...)
Honestly though other than a few prestige shows (Witcher, Mandalorian, Wandvision, Picard) and reruns of 90 and 00 sitcoms (scrubs frazer freinds) when i cant sleep, or star trek binge when my wife pulls a weekend evening shift at work I don't watch that much tv.
That's what I always thought originally, but from when I've spoken with other people about it, it's not the normal way of 'visualizing'. In particular, not being able to do things like imagine a persons face is pretty odd. Similarly, when i'm told to "imagine you're in your childhood bedroom" or "imagine you are on a hot desert island", I can't get anything going, while I'm told most people will construct a detailed mental scenery of it.
Like growing up, I always assumed that those scenes where someone's imagination goes wild and they envision other characters doing crazy things (see: the entirety of Scrubs) were just a literary device, but apparently that's at least sort of close to how a normal brain actually works.
The DRAM comparison is pretty good. Or like having a plastic film over the world that you need to press down on to see anything through.
I haven't watched The Big Bang Theory regularly in a long time but I always enjoy it when I catch it in re-runs. A lot of people claim to hate it because it makes fun of "nerd stereotypes". I never found it insulting, though. Exaggerated, sure, but it's a sitcom, it's supposed to be exaggerated. A lot of the fun of the show is the characters "taking the piss out of each other" [1]. Not everyone will like that kind of humor but it's pretty common in sitcoms and a lot of people seem to enjoy it.
It seems to be common for people who dislike BBT to complain that it ridicules nerds as a class. I don't think that's right at all. Does anyone think that "Scrubs"[2] ridiculed doctors and other healthcare professionals as a general class?
The real joke of 'seacouver' is the an old adage for filming TV in Canada: Film in Vancouver, but never admit so in the script. If you want to tap the US market (who doesn't?) then the story cannot ever be set outside the US. The few shows that did (The Crow series etc) died quick deaths. X-Men went out on a limb by repeatedly saying Wolverine lived in Canada (Rouge finds him there). That was a risk. Everyone assumed they would have put him in Alaska. X-Files set a short arc on a train heading to Vancouver, but even there the bad guys were Japanese. None of the main story could ever happen in Canada.
Sell also Scrubs, filmed in LA but set in "San Frangeles" although never admitted in the script. They wanted to avoid the LA/SF/NY trend of mentioning place names and expecting the whole world to know what you are talking about. For the longest time I thought scrubs was set in Florida.
I added a few examples in another comment. Even Rambo sacrificed his own safety and freedom to help rescue POWs.
Modern day heroes are all a bunch of whining self-centered children. Just go watch any super hero movie today for a good example of that.
It's almost a badge of honor to be morally ambiguous. Compare a list of protaganists, how many are anti-heros? Do we even have any real good guys in movies and tv these days? Even Superman has been turned into a murderer for this generation.
A few examples from popular TV:
Walking Dead: everyone is a murderer. Murder is justified consistently.
Billions: It's hard to know who to root for, they are all rotten. The righteous people are the "bad guys"
Scrubs: All the characters are morally bankrupt (compared to 30 years before it's time)
Ironman: A selfish rich asshole.
Batman: (ok, he was always an anti-hero from day 1)
Deadpool: Do I need to explain this one?
Wicked: A play about how the evil witch is misunderstood.
The Shield, The Wire, modern Star Trek vs old Star Trek, the list is too long...
There has always been corruptions, lack of morals. That's not my issue, it's that today, there simply isn't even close to a minority of actual real main protagonists that are selfless.
I think people find good people trying to do what is right just boring these days.
I'm 43 years old, and in my 20s I went to a few loud rock shows. I had the same experience as you for days afterwards, but at the last one I attended without hearing protection, something funny happened in my right ear. It was like someone turned the tone control right down, and loud noises would distort so badly I couldn't make anything out.
A while later, I was watching a Scrubs episode where one of the characters ruptured an ear drum. That sound closely matched what I remembered hearing, so I've worn hearing protection to every concert since. Even had people make fun of me for it, but as soon as I say "probably ruptured an eardrum at a concert," they stop laughing.
I have tinnitus from a different cause, though. When I was very small, 5 or 6 years old, one of my mother's boyfriends would haul me around by my ears. I remember that my ear started ringing one day, and it never stopped.
I have two tones in one ear, and I think three in the other. 37 years later and it's as bad as it ever was, sadly. I have learned to just tune it out, but I can still hear it if I choose to - annoyingly, when I choose to hear it, I have to wait until I forget about it.
edit: Forgot to note, the ringing is very, very high pitched. Remember what CRT televisions would sound like when you turned them on? Higher pitched than that.
> It wasn't about nothing, but what did make it different is that the characters never changed. They didn't have these huge arcs and defining life moments. They just went about their lives and we watched.
> This is very common to American TV shows both live-action and animated, particularly from The '60s through The '90s in part because programming directors like to have the luxury of repeating episodes in any order, and in part because (prior to the advent of the internet) watching or catching up on a missed episode could be nearly impossible for viewers.
See anything from Gilligan always ruining the rescue attempt to JD always screwing things up with the current romantic interest on Scrubs. There's a long history of shows trying to make baby steps against this (resolving a 'will-they-won't-they' situation, for instance) and the show basically dying as a result. Exceptions like Babylon 5 where major things changed were rare.
Seinfeld was "about nothing" in that the things the reset button applied to were so minor that you basically didn't even notice the reset button most of the time - you wouldn't expect them to majorly change the characters. That, and that it wasn't super-location-centric in the way that Newsradio is "about a radio station" - I mean, it isn't, really, it's about the characters there too, but 99% of the action takes place in the radio station.
I've heard doctors given this same above as just good practice for not getting sued. That sort of stuff will be used against you in court and Scrubs (the TV show) even satirizes this
after reading this article it made me think about and episode of Scrubs I was watching the other day, where Dr. Cox made a decision that led to 3 deaths of his patients and after he was afraid to make decisions during the episode. I thought to myself it must be difficult to make a decisions that could affect peoples lives, would having a machine help make those decisions easier an more accurate?
I mean sure you have doctors that have 20 years of experience but still get the diagnosis wrong even it if it's close, but still it seems that compared to machines that get feed large amounts of data still come up short to. I think saying machines will replace doctors is the wrong approach, in the article one of the doctors interviewed said "If it helps me make decisions with greater accuracy, I’d welcome it”. Thats we need more tools that enable doctors to make more accurate decision than going on an experienced hunch.
I think it's great this subject is being explored it will help more people, and doctors do their jobs even better.
Every time I hear stories like this I think back to the episode of Scrubs were Turk farts in during an abdominal surgery and he lets the attending think he nicked the colon.
"I'm guessing that in 10 years netflix will have tiers and packages. You'll be able to buy an AMC package and a comedy central package, etc."
Possibly. I don't think it is the way they should go though. IMO, people don't want to pay for specific kinds of shows especially not based on the content provider.
I decide on a day to day basis based on my mood which type of show I want to watch and I want it all provided through the same interface.
I think instead they should have a couple of tiers based upon show release dates and content format.
Want all the new tv content produced in the last year? Pay an extra $10/month. Want everything in 4k? Pay an extra $3/month. Etc.
That way plenty of people will just be happy with the base package of $10/month. But people who want to talk about the latest episode etc of a show can pay $20/month. Those with 4k tvs and who want to watch the latest shows can pay $23/month.
Honestly, I tend to watch good but older tv shows. Like this year I have watched Friends and Scrubs. $10/month to be able to watch these older shows is a good deal. $20/month isn't really worth it.
It shouldn't be compared to Big Bang Theory. That show is a typical paint-by-numbers sitcom, the kind that CBS has been cashing big checks on for the past decade. They aren't particularly funny. I think Chuck Klosterman wrote something that these shows are "in the form of funny", which means that they follow a common comedic timing and use the laugh track as a cue. Once you start looking for it, you always see it.
The three camera and laugh track are usually indicators that the show probably isn't "smart funny", but it's not always true. I can watch Seinfeld reruns and pick out the camera cuts, laugh tracks and joke timings, but the show is still pretty clever.
But most people capable of making shows of Seinfeld-quality aren't going to go do a CBS sitcom. Seinfeld's set up was mostly a relic of its era. Today, you can get a single-camera comedy greenlit thanks to the cable channels. Even networks took some chances. I don't watch too many network shows anymore, but I know Scrubs and Arrested Development were single camera shows without laugh tracks and they were on NBC/ABC and Fox, respectively.
As for Silicon Valley, I was expecting more from it. It's a Mike Judge show and the reviews were very positive. I've only seen the first two episodes, but they were at least good enough to make me want to watch more. It sometimes takes these shows a while to build the characters and build enough background for more jokes to connect, but at this point, I'm more worried about the story lines being thin than the comedy. That's what ultimately lost my interest in Entourage. That show started out as being a fun 30 minutes, but it was very superficial and once you realized that the plots were ridiculous and the characters didn't make that much sense, it became tedious to watch. Since both Entourage and Silicon Valley are both based on specific, unique cultures, I think they're fairly comparable.
You know, I actually liked the last season. No, it was not as good as the other seasons, but when I add the handicap for it basically being the first season of a new show, it held up ok. I would have kept watching had it been renewed.
But I understand where people are coming from when they compare it poorly to the other ones. The original Scrubs was a growing up story about JD (and comrades to a lesser extent). The last season was more straight sitcom, less story arc. It wasn't attempting to be as meaningful.
The only possible disadvantage is information about rapidly changing world events (for which Wikipedia isn't the best resource, but still). English Wikipedia dumps are only run on a monthly basis.
Images are much more resource intensive, but if text only is sufficient then the average user can download the compressed Wikipedia dumps in less than 2 days.

I keep a backup on an external hard-drive, in case of apocalypse or censorship (same thing). Nobody can take away my list of Scrubs episodes.
Right, the season that was 11 episodes? At best that accounts for about $2 million after taxes, assuming his agent takes nothing and without taking into account any expenses. Where's the rest?
Scrubs may be a popular show among a certain cohort, it may be highly acclaimed, and it may be quite popular in syndication, but people tend to forget that while it was running it had mediocre ratings and it was effectively cancelled twice.
You have no clue how much money he has, your accusation that he's "taking advantage of the public" is just baseless libel.
The $20 million figure is not based on nothing there's a lot of public information about how much Braff made from scrubs (e.g. $350k per episode in the 2007-2008 season.)
The fact is he doesn't need this Kickstarter to make this movie, he COULD do it himself. But he doesn't want to risk ONLY his own money. So he's taking advantage of the public.
Here's what I think is missing from this kickstarter (and was a huge part of the Veronica Mars kickstarter success) -- you can't pay a reasonable amount of money and get the final product.
I realize he probably can't sell advance tickets (beyond special cases like opening night) but how about, say, the DVD/Bluray/iTunes/Amazon version when it becomes available. I'm not a huge Zach Braff fan, but I liked Scrubs a lot, and I enjoyed Garden State. I would totally pay $20 to get the production diary + digital version when it becomes available.
Personally, I think the "pay me to make this movie/tv series and if I get the money I will deliver it to you" model is the future for a lot of entertainment (especially for known quantities like -- say -- the people who produced Stargate SG-1). The inefficiency of paying a network to speculatively create and back TV shows based on guesstimated potential advertising revenue and a tiny chance of a massive payoff if the show is a hit is horrendous.
It's not just celebrity. Melissa Joan Hart's project just doesn't seem like it has much thought to it. "Oh they can do it for Veronica Mars, so let me do it too." The project video wasn't great. Plus the premise isn't known at all -- not saying a movie about "Clarissa Explains It All" would be successful, but it would have been more successful.
Someone at my work jumped out of her seat when I mentioned the Veronica Mars project to her. Zach Braff might not have the cult following, but at least he has the Reddit community and Scrubs/Garden State fans to at least get him to reach his goal. Many of the perks for the Veronica Mars project were filled quickly, which slowed down the funding after the big spike, so we'll see what happens with Zach Braff's movie.
"Who cares what statistics show? Look at medicine. 80% of people with pancreatic cancer die within 5 years and 95% of appendectimies occur with zero complications. But we both know cases of pancreatic cancer patients that lived and appendicitis patients that unfortunately passed. Statistics mean nothing to the individual"
- Dr. Cox (Scrubs)
That quote has always stuck with me since I saw that episode, if you enter a situation knowing statistics of outcomes, it can affect how you perform.
Content thinks about this a little bit differently.
Here are a few factors that may make the proposed offering less favorable than the status quo, even if you factor in piracy:
(1) Windowing. First-run content is way more valuable than longer tail content. So sure, Simpsons episodes can go for $2 on Amazon and eventually come bundled on Netflix, but only after a wait. This is a more favorable situation for content. Different media and different windows command different fees, and this allows content producers to sell to different people at different times. In the case of Scrubs, for instance, Buena Vista/ABC produced the content, sold the first run rights to NBC (who paid ~20% of cost for first-run rights) and then later syndicates it to Comedy Central and others. They ultimately become available on DVD, iTunes, etc.
(2) Advertising revenue isn't enough. That's right, in many cases, only around half of value comes from advertisers. "But TV is free on my bunny-ears!" Sure...but not if you pay for cable. If you do, the cable guys have to pay retransmission consent to content guys, and those costs can be considerable. On cable, most if not all of the content revenues are from subscription fees.
(3) Bundling. Taking in subscription revenue allows content to take bigger risks on (potentially) great content, and to invest more in it upfront. Think about HBO. They cost a fortune, but I think that many would argue that they are worth it.
On a related note... I part of a new TV startup that addresses many of these issues. We're serious, we're venture-backed and we're disruptive. PM me if you're interested.
I would love to watch films/tv episodes on my kindle this way. Although half of the enjoyment is in watching an actor perform - I find it a struggle to spend any significant time watching television. Whereas, I could consume an episode fairly quickly in this format.
Although I'm sure a lot would be lost in translation. Could you imagine watching Scrubs in this format? Or House?
Absolutely not, I'd be perfectly happy to pay a reasonable fee (for music I now have a Spotify subscription and I love it!) or be forced to watch adds or whatnot. I keep waiting for hulu.com and similar sites to eventually (hopefully) open up to Europe, but I'm not holding my breath :\
But until that time I just pirate stuff of the internet. (They haven't even aired anything past season 5 of Scrubs yet here, at this rate I will have to wait until my death if I want watch Game of Thrones...)
Not directly related to the speed of news but interesting reading is "Don't believe it! How lies become news" by Kitty Alexander, who was also involved with the fantastic documentary "Outfoxed".
It's my impression that people lump news and doctors into the same bunch: they are somehow infallible. Somehow they are always doing the right thing.
Well "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scrubs" pretty much ruined the medical industry for me :) I guess maybe Season 5 of "The Wire" does the same for mass media?
To be fair to Hulu, the restrictions on content distribution are from the networks, not Hulu. To explain: a television show is created by a network or a third party and then that show is licensed for distribution within a country by that network or third party. So, Disney makes Scrubs and runs it on ABC in the US (although it had licensed it to NBC for a while) and, if there is a market for it in other countries, licenses it to a network in those countries for distribution in that market.
So, when a network gives online distribution rights to Hulu for content, it's only for the US. In order to make sure that they keep getting content, Hulu really has to prove that they won't be hacked - that Hulu can effectively serve ads that won't be easily blocked, that Hulu can control distribution, etc.
It sucks. However, the behavior is more network/hollywood related than Hulu related. I'm sure the Hulu folks would love to be an open free-for-all, but they also realize that by playing ball they're able to offer something that, frankly, I find more entertaining and a much better experience while also having a much greater potential for profit.
Who knows? Maybe someday show creators will simply license their material for online distribution, completely bypassing networks and borders. In the meantime, Hulu is trying to make sure they don't piss off their benefactors and have content yanked because they can't control distribution. Is it good? No. But I'd blame the networks before leveling my anger at Hulu.
It's not true that killed stories can't be seen by anyone except the submitter. They can be seen by everyone else who has showdead turned on.
You can easily check whether a site is banned by submitting something from it and seeing if it gets killed immediately. I.e. if it's visible on the new page to someone who's not logged in. (You may have to wait a minute because the new page is cached.) Here is the complete list:
The great majority are banned for spamming and/or voting rings. Others (like url shortening services, squidoo, etc) are banned because they're often used by spammers. Others are banned for the reasons I listed in that recent essay: linkjacking, being offtopic, or characteristically being fluff.
When I was 15, I used to think the Pirate Bay guys were heroes. Not anymore.
Encouraging piracy and then acting like you're martyrs is not the best way to combat RIAA/MPAA. I really appreciate services like Jamendo, which might not be as effective as straight out theft TPB-style but are actual vehicles which "free" the information that, presumably, wants to be free.
DISCLAIMER: Yes, I download torrents from TPB. I know it's wrong, but they don't air Lost, Scrubs, South Park or any of my favorite shows in India so I have no choice. If they'd air it on TV, I'd be more than happy to pay my DTH provider an extra amount to get those channels. Heck, I'd even purchase episodes from an online retailer if only it didn't have that nasty DRM. (BTW, does anyone know if the iTunes store works in India now?)
I wonder, how much in dollar value are the ads in one episode of scrubs. It seems like the TV networks could use something like this technology and just charge a per-episode rate of (X * 1.5).
Based on some back of the envelope using the superbowl ($3 million / (30 second spot * 100 million viewers) = $0.03 per viewer commercial * 36 commercials per hour = $1.08. That's probably an upper bound since super bowl ads have a good chance of making the news outlets, talk shows, etc.
So would you pay $1.50 an episode to watch commercial free your favorite show whenever you want? For Firefly yeah, but I'm not so sure about The View.
Then again my implicit wage rate is $0.03 * 120 = $3.60 an hour so I'm willing to earn $3.60 an hour watching television ads but only if I get Joss Whedon unpaid breaks.

Hi HN,
My friend Alex Repty and I made this story game about pull requests and collaborative software dev.
Cheers.
It's suprisingly good, like it's it's 100% worth watching if you liked scrubs.
My brain automatically went to Scrubs Season 5 Episode 20.
I have been threatening to do this for a while just put all of my dvd rips on a server on make channels based on genera scifi (star trek stargate etc) cartoon (loony toons popeye...) sitcoms (scrubs HowIMetYourMother Frasier Cheer) all of my kids horrible shows on another. i often find i end up flipping thorugh netflix with option paralysis when i mostly want background noise this would be nice.
did you by chance get an idea from the tv show Scrubs? :D
I don't care that you've been copying the source code into a dated folder every day since 1987, it's 2024 and you need an actual Revision Control System.
> the Scrubs finale should be considered the last episode of season 8 (which was great). Season 9 should be considered a spinoff series.
If you're going to divide the show like that, wouldn't the spinoff start with season 5?
I've been burned too many times by streaming services:
1. Removing entire series/movies
2. Removing specific episodes in a series
3. Making changes to content (e.g. Scrubs and its soundtrack)
4. Only having the inferior quality version of some content
5. And finally, to a lesser extent, just having bad metadata (Netflix in particular has listed episodes out of order)
I'm becoming more and more envious of those YouTubers with the wall of physical blurays and games as their backdrop.
Not from US, but whenever I hear about US folks having an annual physical it reminds me of the Scrubs episode on full body scans
I, too, watched the early 2000s medical sitcom Scrubs, featuring the beloved Dr. Todd.
> only person that likes doing that stuff... leads to episodes like this
This reminds me of an episode in Scrubs where one of the residents volunteers to announce bad news to patients or family [1].
[1] Season 2, episode 4 (S02E04), My Big Mouth
Transcript: https://scrubs.fandom.com/wiki/My_Big_Mouth_transcript

TV shows I've already seen are my go to as well. Parks and Rec is a staple. Office, Scrubs, That 70s Show, Big Bang Theory are all great as well.
Sometimes I get into phases that need a little extra. The Marvel movies phase 1-3 are solid, as is Breaking Bad.
I swap to prog rock music (again stuff I've heard multiple times before) if I have something particularly creative and demanding to work on.
* Airplane * Fletch * Uncle Buck * A movie called "Matrix" that seems to be unrelated to "The Matrix" * The Critic (yes, the animated one) * Scrubs * Simpsons * Dave (recent TV show not movie) * Glass Onion
2000s were a different time.
Seemingly this: https://etcanada.com/news/660724/scrubs-blackface-episodes-being-pulled-from-streaming/
As they say in the Scrubs tv show: "Maybe the dirty little secret about sex is that it isn't so dirty after all"
I'd recommend watching Scrubs if you think surgeons are perceived as the intellectuals in medicine.
It's incredibly striking how the dubbing changed the character of Dr Cox: In the German dub, he's portrayed in a high-pitched voice, rendering him a maniacal goofball, whereas McGinley's original performance uses a deeper flatter voice that made him appear much more psychopathic (though admittedly I only saw one episode in English, so that may be cherry-picking).
are they paying for more than basic cable?
I know with my family we aren't My parent may for netflix My sister pays for HBO My wife and I pay for Disney/Hulu (also espn came in the bundle but none of us watch sports but there wasn't a option to not get it) we all share accounts and each have our profile.
Mostly I just listen to audible or watch youtube
I discovered Koyaanisqatsi and Glass after hearing a 10 second bit played on an episode a Scrubs! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM2VZk560_g
I think that's one of my 'favorite' saddest episodes/storylines in Scrubs. That and the ones with Brandon Fraser.
There's actually a Scrubs episode which did precisely what the author suggests: https://youtu.be/PdrrgVVi-9U
The spread of a disease throughout the hospital is visualized as a green slime passed on between people.

This isn't new. There was an episode of Scrubs that brought up patient donations.
Being good is evidently boring...
/rant
Yes.
Which is quite common (Scrubs for example has had to re-edit library music into most of it's episodes for most uses, instead of the original tracks).
Sorry, this sounds backwards.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ResetButton
I'm pretty sure an episode of Scrubs did something very similar.
Episode about how unrealistic House is was one of the high points of the later Scrubs seasons.
In fairness, Scrubs is way funnier in German. [1]
Interestingly, when Elliot actually speaks German in the episode they dub that into Italian.

It was kind of a Big Deal. I've been part of or party to this conversation many times (details vary, this is the gist of it tho):
"blah blah blah Zach Braff blah blah"
"Who's Zach Braff?"
"The guy from Scrubs, he also did some movies."
"Oh yeah, Garden State right? That had a great sound track."
Statistics mean nothing to the individual" - Dr.
