(Spoilers ahead for the first few minutes of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse")
After I watch a movie for the first time I like to check out a few YouTube reaction channels to see their take on it. They sometimes catch interesting things I missed.
I've watched a few such reactions to "Across the Spider-Verse" and one interesting thing that stood out is when after a fight Spider-Women, who is wanted for murder, is out of webs and cannot escape when Captain Stacy, who is leading the effort to capture her, arrives. Captain Stacy does not know that Spider-Woman is his daughter. She reveals her identity to him, says she is innocent, and he is clearly conflicted, but finally starts reading her her rights.
The reactors almost uniformly condemn him for this, some quite adamantly. They think he should have let her go.
"Chai" means "tea", so "Chai Tea" is "Tea Tea".
"ATM" means "Automatic Teller Machine", so "ATM Machine" is "Automatic Teller Machine Machine".
Both are mentioned in the animated movie "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse".
It is especially bad for animated shows that have made an explicit artistic choice to let (parts of) the animation progress at a lower frame rate. My kids watched "spider-man: across the spider-verse" at a friends place where smoothing was not turned off, and it completely ruined the artistic feel and made the movie feel like a stuttering video game.
A couple things:
1. The academy has had a significant increase of young voters in the past 10 years or so. Generally speaking, young voters are more likely to take animation as a "serious" medium.
2. These interviews were always somewhat overstated. Of course some voters have stupid rationales, but I don't think this dominates the academy.
3. Disney's Inside Out 2 was nowhere close to winning the award this year - Flow's biggest competition was The Wild Robot, which did gross far more than Inside Out 2, but far below Inside Out 2.
If you look at the past couple years, The Boy and the Heron (Studio Ghibli) won over Across the Spider-Verse (with Pixar's movie Elemental nowhere close) in 2023, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio won over Across the Spider-Verse (with Pixar's movie Turning Red nowhere close) in 2022, etc.
I'm curious what year you're thinking about above. Perhaps Toy Story 4 over Klaus in 2019?
> one of the reasons I don't like modern animation is the lack of effort in the actual animating.
The new Ninja Turtles and Spider-Man movies certainly contradict that, as do plenty of animations from Japan such as anything by Satoshi Kon.
Yes, there’s a lot more garbage today but that because there’s a lot more of it in general. The good stuff is going strong and there’s innovation still happening.
South Park is a bad example for the argument, because it’s atypical in many ways. They do the whole episode in under a week, including the writing and animation, and the cast is basically the creators.

It's not intuitive if you don't know it. When you do know the common keybindings you feel as if modelling by hand.
There are 14 year olds making great use of it [1].

A lot of movies rated 0.5 or 5 just to scale the top 250. It recently happened with Across the Spider-verse.
I saw this film at a cinema, but I have to say it’s quite disappointing.
It’s an impressive feat, yes, and at many points it looks really beautiful. But there are other points where the oil paintings are (understandably!) rushed, and the story is very thin.
Overall, I was far more impressed by “Across the Spider-Verse”. I’d be amazed if any animator can watch that and not think “Yes!! That’s it! This is the future of my profession!”
