As Anna recounts her grandfather’s life, viewers gain an intimate, personal perspective on the paranoia and purges that left even his closest circles living in constant fear.

It's obviously very unrealistic, but I read Robert Service's biography about Stalin and it's interesting to see how many details in the movie are inspired by real events. I recommend the biography by the way, it's engrossing.
On Stalin, I recommend the HBO movie "Stalin" with a Robert Duvall playing a very realistic Stalin. The movie also covers his tortuous relationship with his daughter.

If you want accuracy, a very good but slightly forgotten movie is a 1992 HBO movie called Stalin with Robert Duvall

I dismissed the notion that 2 correctional facilities that nominally are subject to a legal regime are in the same set as Camp X-Ray.
Well, we Americans until 21st century were repeatedly told that our way of life was in fact “morally superior” to “torturing” USSR. I can dig up the imdb link for TV shows in 90s that used that very line in discussing the Soviets.

Talking about HBO historical tv shows on the soviet union, one of their best production was Stalin (1992), with Robert Duvall impressive in Stalin. They did a series on historical figures in the 1990s. The one on the judge Falcone was also pretty good.
