Reality

When rent is not paid on a storage locker for three months in California, the contents can be sold by an auctioneer as a single lot of items in the form of a cash-only auction. The show follows professional buyers who purchase the contents based only on a five-minute inspection of what they can see from the door when it is open. The goal is to turn a profit on the merchandise.

It costs money to landfill it. You can watch the same progression on shows like Storage Wars where the early episodes have nice stuff in the units and people making good money on DVDs and furniture and then in later seasons they’re getting 10% of what they used to get because the market is flooded with brand new junk and nobody wants the quality used stuff anymore.

But landlords kind of do that... there’s even an entire TV show dedicated to it, called Storage Wars. People didn’t pay the bill for their storage locker so the owners of the locker sell off all the stuff inside.

I'm equally amazed by the effort that goes into foreign dubbing. Staying in Chennai, India and channel surfing, Sky TV had dozens of US channels (TLC, Discovery channel, etc) which not only had English/Hindi/Tamil subtitles - but foreign language dubs too!

Not just movies, but full overdubbing for 20-episode season disposable reality TV shows. Think, "Storage Wars" etc. Spent over an hour channel surfing and flipping languages.

I would /love/ to know how they take the original subtitle tracks and translate/dub them efficiently.

Yup, there's a reality TV show [0] based on the premise that these units can hold real value.

Trivial Pain (if that): I was watching Storage Wars last night and I couldn't help but wonder about bidding patterns.

The show has such a rich data set and their bidding strategies are so simple that I would love to see someone break down the metrics on that show. It's rare that someone has chronologically recorded all bets of all competitors and followed up on the asset value after the purchase.

Strangely, this reality TV show could be sitting on valuable information about how people bid and how to predict a successful auction.
