Classic Saturday-morning cartoon series featuring magical blue elf-like creatures called Smurfs. The Smurfs, named for their personalities, inhabit a village of mushroom houses in an enchanted forest. These loveable creatures are led by Papa Smurf and live carefree... except for one major threat to their existance: Gargamel, an evil but inept wizard who lives in a stone-built house in the forest; and his feline companion, the equally nasty Azrael.

If you set the limit to 40 years it's a bit arbitrary, but you can still catch some of the late production of Asterix and Obelix and the Smurfs. For movies, Jean-Claude Van Damme is in, but he made most of his career in the US. I am not into electronic music, but I have at least heard the name Stromae.

For us, it's a few simple rules.

    * Some TV only in the weekend (Tintin, Smurfs) and with daddy or mummy. It's a bit like Sunday cuddle time. One episode max. (about 30 minutes). * She is not allowed to grab the phone and 'scroll' herself. She can see photos about her that we send or receive. That's maybe 5 times a day. * She is allowed to grab the phone to use it as a phone (speak to family members).

The hardest, and what I am bad at, is to grab the phone myself when with her. For example scrolling Twitter while I feed her. I have to get better at that.

Occasionally, she might get a few hours of Tintin where we travel by car to France. The following days, seeing her constantly nagging for more TV reminds us how addictive that is, and how careful we have to be.

    > People who were kids with no taste and a lot of time to fill

Very true. I grew up in Germany, but we got most of the cartoons that were popular in the US (plus some Japanese stuff) as well, dubbed.

One particular situation from the late 80s or early 90s that I remember was when the channel that showed the Smurfs, which I liked, was somehow repeating the same episode over and over again. Maybe there was an error at the station (I wouldn't be too surprised if nobody paid that close attention to the children's programming), or maybe I just happened to catch all the reruns in strange coincidence. It's hard to remember the specifics.

But what I do remember well is that I watched that episode, one that I actually did not like to begin with, over and over again, disliking it more and more each time. When the episode started playing and I realized that it was that episode again within the first few seconds, I got so disheartened and disappointed. And then I continued watching it.

Nowadays, that's a pretty funny, if not somewhat bizarre, memory. As an adult, there is no way I would force myself through any show's episode that I don't like anyway repeatedly, why did I "have to" as a child? Similarly, I remember a few entire cartoons that I was not particularly fond off, or sometimes actively disliked, and I still watched those, too, "because that's what was on TV right now".

Apparently, realizing that I had agency over how I spend my own entertainment time was something I had to learn better growing up.

Im not sure how it is today but when I grew up in Finland in the 80s all the most popular tv-series for kids where in English only. Of the top of my head: The Transformers, Inspector Gadget, M.A.S.K., He-Man, G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, Care bears, Smurfs, Postman pat, DJ Kat show, and then non-cartoon shows like like MacGyver, Knight Rider, Airwolf, Quantum Leap, Rescue 911, etc.

We also watched some some non-English tv shows like the Swedish "Bjornes magasin" and the Finnish "Pikku Kakkonen". But these shows where not as cool and not as plentiful as those English tv shows.
