How much of that high FPS or interpolated media have you seen? At first I too was jarred by it, as if it were sped up somehow, but after a few hours, I couldn't watch regular 24 FPS anymore as it literally looked like a slideshow. I distinctly remember watching Thor: Love and Thunder in theaters and when they panned over the pantheon, you literally couldn't see anything. In contrast, Avatar 2 with the 48 FPS scenes was one of the most immersive movies of my life.

I really like the Marvel stuff but they have two problems that are well known at this point:

    Quality and volume.

Some of their recent efforts, like Loki season two and (apparently) The Marvels are quite good.

The problem is we already got burned by a number of poor entries like Thor: Love and Thunder and The Eternals (I mean, wow). It seems rare I hear about a good movie these days, even when they make one, but the bad ones get mentioned a lot. Or the ones that people just dislike for whatever ideological reason like She-hulk: Attorney at Law.

Much like with Star Wars they put things out so fast that it feels like you’re always trying to keep up. Even if DC and others didn’t keep trying to make superhero movies they would have oversaturated the market alone.

Combine those and it can feel like you’re always trying to keep up with a bunch of bad stuff in hopes of finding the rare good one. It’s exhausting.

And all of that is just Marvel stuff. But they’re also up against great TV, great video games, and everything else going on in the world. Trends away from wanting to go to movie theaters.

They drove the audience away with too much cash grabbing. Pure and simple.

I 100% reject the nonsense “go woke go broke” arguments, everything that’s going on can be explained without that perfectly, and there is no actual evidence to back it up.

I ‘m watching “A new hope” and “Waterworld” and it’s amazing how practical effects can hold up. I’m not against CGI, but they’re all over the place in Marvel’s movies. Even “The Ten Commandments” is more watchable than “Love and Thunder”

Recent flops: nearly all new star wars content, Indiana Jones, buzz lifhtyear, Thor love and thunder, Ant-Man quantumania. All should have been hits. People did not want to watch new content. Why? You mostly anwered in comments. Most of you complain that writing is bad, and I believe this majority. That would also mean that critical drinker and nerdeotic are correct in their analysis. I think it all comes to inflation of woke. Woke is the goal, nothing else really matters. The movies become predictable. Fame character cannot loose a fight. It is a checklist driven scenarios, where you have tick all the same boxes. You cannot depict unlikeable bad gay person. There were in history movies about racism, gender, but they were not preachy. They were discussing the issue. That's the difference.

Yeah. I especially find it interesting when Netflix says something you couldn't pay me to watch is a 92% match with my profile (or however they phrase it).

But part of the problem the algorithm has is that content is of very uneven quality. I look at very recent things that, a few years ago, I would have wanted to see, and scroll on by. The first Avengers movie? Kind of rushed but acceptable. Thor Love and Thunder? Garbage. (Not Netflix examples, just examples)

We want to see new content but have learned from recent experience that it's not worth the trouble. The algorithm simply can't understand that.

It may just be confirmation bias, but I've been noticing this with some scenes set in the outdoors shot in front of LED walls. They have almost too beautifully perfect, almost colorful lighting conditions.

Examples that come to mind right now:

    1. Scene in The Batman where Bruce and Selina have a moment in the under construction tower at golden hour. Maybe some other scenes in that movie too. 2. The entire opening sequence in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Avengers Endgame was just ok. I never saw ant man. Thor Love and Thunder was an affront to film making, and potentially a crime against humanity.

So we can agree to disagree.

I guess I'll go to bat for the multi-billion dollar megacorp since nobody else is doing it

Avengers: Endgame was great. They did a heist through time that was basically a speed run of all the other movies. Ant-Man preserved the "F You" energy from Hank Pym while keeping things just grounded enough to be fun. Thor: Love and Thunder was basically an action-packed version of a "Flight of the Conchords" episode and they ended up solving their problems by talking instead of just smashing heads in.

So far as big budget movies go, these are the best I've ever seen

Or they simply watched everything they were interested in watching on the first service so there was no point in keeping the subscription active. It's not like it takes any effort to cancel. They will come back to it later (it's easy at most to reactivate a dormant subscription) when it has accumulated enough new stuff.

That's what I've been doing for the streaming services that aren't bundled with something else I have for reasons other than video streaming (Prime Video because I have Amazon Prime, Hulu because I have Spotify, Peacock Premium because I have XFinity as my ISP, and Paramount+ because I have Walmart+).

For example a couple months before "Avengers: Endgame" was released I realized that I had to see it in theaters. My previous approach for Marvel movies of waiting until they showed up on some non-premium cable channel like FXX meant I was a couple years behind, and I realized there was no way I'd be able to avoid major spoilers while waiting to see Endgame that way. So I got a month of Netflix (they had all the Marvel movies back then) and caught up on Marvel, and a few other things, then cancelled.

Later I got Disney+ for a week (free trial) and caught up on Disney and Pixar animated movies (Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, Frozen II, Onward), watched Captain Marvel, rewatched Endgame to see what I'd missed on my bathroom break when I saw it in theaters, and watched the Star Wars trilogy that starts with The Force Awakens, watched Rogue One, and cancelled.

Right now, a couple years later, I'm back on Disney+, because they sent me on offer for a month for $1.99. I've caught up again on Pixar (Soul, Luca, Turning Red), Disney animation (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto), Marvel (Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, the Loki series), some Simpsons shorts, and am trying to decide if there is any new Star Wars that interests me. When the month is up I will rewatch Luca once or twice, and then cancel.

I'll be back on Netflix for a month probably next year to watch Lucifer.

I'll also probably at some point do a month of HBO Max for South Park.

What a colossal waste of money. Thor: Love and Thunder had a budget of half that, and that film is a classic contender for 'Big Blockbuster Budget Franchise Film' fame.

I could build an entire theme park for that amount of money, from scratch. 10+ Roller coasters, footpaths, restrooms, in-park IT offices, the works!

Why spend so much but not complete the game? Because the gravy train keeps rolling. Game studios are motivated to ship the game because until they ship, they don't get paid as a company, yet the employees keep drawing paychecks, etc.

But this studio has no motivation to do that, they are getting the pay out now.

I actually liked Thor: Love and Thunder. It works for me because they're explicitly poking fun at themselves. It's not a serious movie, so it gets away with the stupid stuff because it's part of the joke.

Rings of Power does not have that excuse.

I disagree completely. We've had this ability to create photorealistic fiction for decades now. You can go see how impressive the capability is by paying $12 at your local movie theater. The only thing that's changed is the ease and cost of doing it, but that has also been dropping for decades. Having people think that it's not possible right now is what is dangerous, because it's absolutely possible right now, no AI needed.

Even if this is released quickly, the internet would be flooded with crazy images, and people would quickly learn to have a critical eye to the media that they see, which should already be the case, because photorealistic fiction is already possible, as everyone experiences with every blockbuster movie. Only a slight shift in perspective is required to realize that every image and video you see aren't any different than frames/clips of Thor: Love And Thunder.
