My two favourite books I read this year were both non-fiction:
* Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage - If you enjoy books about persistence in the face of adversity, this has it in spades. When I was in my 20's I saw the movie "Touching the Void" and remember being in total awe at a human's ability to persevere in seemingly impossible situations. Shackleton and his crew bring this power of determination to another level.
* On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft - Reading this gave me another level of respect for Stephen King. He also pointed me towards another excellent book "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life".
Some other great climbing documentaries:
- Touching The Void (It's an older movie but maybe the most harrowing survival story I've ever heard).
- Meru
- Free Solo
- The Alpinist
- Valley Uprising
This sounds like Touching the Void (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/).

"Touching the Void" is another great climbing/mountaineering book that is well worth the read. I have not seen the movie adaptation yet, so I cannot comment on its quality.
Touching the Void is the story of Joe Simpson's epic climb on Siula Grande with Simon Yates.
They summited the 20,000+ foot mountain in the Andes, but Joe fell just below the summit and broke his leg. Simon could have climbed down alone to "get help", but he chose to try and get his partner down. I won't give away any more; Joe survived in one of the most epic survival stories ever.
The movie is based on a book, and it's really well done. This story makes me stronger in the mountains, because every time I start to complain about how hard or miserable something is, I realize things could be much, much worse. If I ever do have an epic of my own, I'm pretty sure I'll handle it better for being aware of Joe's story.
There's a documentary also called "Touching The Void", which has fairly in-depth interviews with both climbers involved.
I'd like to recommmend Touching the Void, an amazing mountaineering/survival story. Was also made into a movie that the author of the book seems to have favorable opinion of.
amazing--"Touching the Void" for the aviation world.
"[E]xtracting myself from the parachute harness, I discovered the source of those flapping-strap noises heard on the way down. My seat belt and shoulder harness were still draped around me, attached and latched."
in the blockbuster film adaptation of this account, (starring Keanu Reeves) the pilot is still holding the stick when his parachute brings him to the ground.
The full story of the 1996 everest disaster is very interesting/scary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Mount_Everest_disaster
The book/film "into thin air" is supposedly good too.
EDIT: the other good climbing disaster film to watch is "touching the void." powerful stuff.
You'll probably like also "Touching the void". The movie/documentary is fantastic too.
Touching the Void - I love this legendary true story of two mountaineers' first ascent of a peak in the Andes for the survival aspect of it. Grit, determination, and patience are three qualities I truly admire. It is a must watch even if mountaineering/climbing doesn't interest you.
Apollo 13 - for how ingenuity, teamwork, and a calm head can help you overcome the most challenging of problems. I wish I was born in that era and had the opportunity of working among that group of people. The pursuit of a cause greater than oneself.
Shawshank Redemption - much has been said about this movie.
Forrest Gump - odd choice I know, but it's a remarkable story of serendipity. We often fail to realize just how much of life is purely a matter of chance.
