Just to be clear, the top grossing movie so far this year: Super Mario Galaxy. And #3: Toy Story 5
In 2025 all the top 10 films were either 3D animation or CGI-heavy action, with one exception: F1 used a lot of practical effects.
Maybe the problem with Moana and Mandalorian is that even lazy uninformed movie-goers recognized an empty cash-grab when they saw the trailer.
Took my kids to see Toy Story 5.
While watching it, I thought about AI generated content.
I have never personally met anyone who worked on any of the Toy Story movies. I know, from documentaries etc, who Brad Bird and John Lasseter are. I've also watched the video [0] about how Toy Story 2 almost got deleted (which I highly recommend if you are in storage, DevOps or SRE).
There are other movies like the Wild Robot that:
- had big emotional impact on me (b/c I'm a parent)
- are 100% animated
- I have zero idea who made them
I say all of this b/c at some point, most people don't care if the movie was hand painted cels, CGI done by humans or fully AI generated with human text prompting. If the feeling is strong, people will have a "bigger" reaction which in turn will make it more memorable. It's all basically on a spectrum of "humans using tools". They care about how the movie makes them feel. It started with humans spitting charcoal at a wall [1] and now it's linear algebra.

Taking that as an example, was decline because Harley kept to the same design and never innovated to compete against Honda and Co?
It's not all manufacturing costs, and I always receive the impression that it's because it's cash cow situation. It's a formula that works and never because they invest in a different avenue. Until it doesn't and that's then when they send in the government.
Excluding manufacturing costs is it because they are scared of it being a failure? The same cash cow can be seen with the likes of Disney Pixar and Toy Story 5, a pointless movie plot at this point.
As schools are off and Toy Story 5 is just around the corner, we started binge-watching Toy Story from 1 to 4. While watching, suddenly this idea popped up: what if a GitHub repo came alive just like the toys? I started writing with something basic and enhanced it using Gemini Flash. Hope you’ll like it.
Film franchises tap into nostalgia, too. “Toy Story 5” will be watched by more than a few adults
I always thought the reason Toy Story works for adults and children is that the toys are the 'parents': caring for their child, but with the awareness that their job is to render themselves unnecessary.
"She advised film-makers to focus on character and emotion[...] So evident is Pixar’s formula that it has inspired an internet meme: “What if toys had feelings? What if fish had feelings? WHAT IF FEELINGS HAD FEELINGS?” [...] Film franchises tap into nostalgia, too. “Toy Story 5” will be watched by more than a few adults who saw “Toy Story” as youngsters 31 years ago."
Reminds me very much of Roger Scruton's diagnosis that our popular culture is defined by kitsch (which in turn is defined by sentimentality), echoing Wilde that the big problem of the latter is that it wants to have an emotion without paying for it, gratification on the cheap.
And I think animation is particularly ripe for nostalgia, just like gaming because effectively it never ages. The Scrubs reboot is an interesting case because just watching the first episode I think you can actually see Scruton's point, there's something immediately off about seeing the same jokes and characters played out by people well into their 50s in a painfully way too HD recreated set.
I genuinely hate to break it to you, but Toy Story 5 has been officially announced by Disney.

Copyright is not the right law, but it is what YouTube has a policy for.
The correct Intellectual Property issues here are Publicity Rights and Trademarks.
I can not make my own Toy Story 5 movie because Disney (I think) owns the Trademark.
