I noticed this when I was served an ad for the newish Venom movie. Add in TurboTax, and it seems like they really have no discretion about who they are willing to advertise for. That is worrisome.

    > I meant pacifism is promoted as the only recourse for the general citizen

What media are you consuming? Take a look at any list of top-grossing films of the past few decades and it's riddled with non-state lone wolf actors using violence to solve their problems.

You're saying that John Wick, Creed, Spider-Man, The Fall Guy, Furiosa, Venom, etc. are teaching Americans to be pacifists?

Thanks for sharing. Really refreshing take on HN.

I suspect I have something similar to yours, but on a much, much lower degree : a "voice" that tells me things with an opinion of its own.

Well, the way it manifests for me, is that it is not a voice. More like, I can ask myself questions and my body (more often my head) will react in a binary way. Like just saying yes or no. It is useful for Tarot, which it pushes me to take certain cards or not and make divination fun for me and others around.

It does not know the future. It changes its opinion. It says it does not want to cause me harm and so far it hadn't, but because it changes its opinion I don't believe it 100%. It seems to "prefer" things from others. But it is not me. It seems that it "reacts" faster than me, which brings me to think that it's some sort of intuition or "id" or whatever.

Personally, I live with it through the concept of Daemon, like the one Socrates had. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daimon But it is just a binary one.

Also, funnily, I asked it if it had a name. It said "no". I asked it if it wanted a name. It said "no". So there's that. It reminds me of Venom in the recent movies, minus the "eating people" part.

I always knew this was the case, it was a huge hunch I had from the Spiderman/Venom fiasco.

Was Amazing Spiderman incredible? no it was far from it, was Venom 1 good? it was good except the last fight, literally.

Yet its rating was 30%. (audience 80%)

Morbius as much as I hated the actor personally, I liked the movie, it felt like spiderman 1 in a way, the cinematic shots were better than anything Marvel has done in years.

Yet they all get horribly rated, Black Adam was I felt, good, more interesting and better CGI than literally every Marvel movie since maybe endgame, yet it was critically butchered.

NOBODY can tell me that Disney doesn't weaponize critics.

(For people who do not get it, review bombing Sony produced Marvel movies made them do worse at box office which in turn made Sony or forced Sony to give the rights back to Marvel).

Movies are portals into enormous realms of imagination, encapsulating the whole range of human emotion, experience, and creativity. They take audiences to other worlds, present insights on important societal concerns, and provide an escape from the mundane. Films, with their riveting plots and magnificent graphics, have the capacity to inspire, entertain, and challenge our assumptions, making them an essential element of world culture. Power Rangers Diamond Painting: A Colorful Quest Since the early 1990s, the Power Rangers have been a fixture of children's entertainment, stealing hearts with their bright outfits and high-energy battles against otherworldly foes. Power Rangers Diamond Painting is a rich color palette that allows craftsmen to reproduce the Red, Blue, Yellow, and other Rangers in their full transformed splendor. Each diamond reflects the series' championing attitude of cooperation and curiosity.

A Christmas Story Diamond Painting: Reliving the Festive Magic "A Christmas Story" is a famous holiday classic, with memorable scenes such as Ralphie's search for a Red Ryder BB gun and the iconic leg lamp becoming cultural touchstones. These sceneries may be brought to life with a festive glitter with the A Christmas Story Diamond Painting kit. The precisely placed diamonds embody the movie's warmth and comedy, making it an ideal holiday crafting activity.

Venom Diamond Painting: Dark Brilliance The gloomy anti-hero "Venom" from the Spider-Man universe stands in stark contrast to the happier realms of Power Rangers and Christmas stories. The character's deep duality is captured in Venom Diamond Painting, which depicts both the terrifying symbiote and its nuanced bond with host Eddie Brock. The resultant artwork is a mix of dark tones and eye-catching patterns, ideal for fans of darker movie themes.

Conclusion Diamond painting is a tribute to cinema's huge influence, allowing fans to reproduce their favorite movie sequences in stunning detail. This art form celebrates the wonder of movies, one diamond at a time, whether it's the heroism of the Power Rangers, the nostalgic appeal of "A Christmas Story," or the gripping intensity of "Venom."

Same, I thought it was super fun! A very well-made middle-class action movie. I wish there were more like it. And I 100% agree with the comparison to Venom.

  7. PositivesatvikpendemDec 12, 2022

I disagree, it's a great film. It came out the same year as Venom but somehow out-Venom'd Venom, ie having an actual implanted AI/symbiote that can control you, and the end of the film is probably exactly what would happen to you too.

I don't think it's much of a cycle, there has been a constant undercurrent of "mature" cynical superhero comics and movies for decades now. In the '00s we had the Christian Bale Batman movies, and adaptations of V for Vendetta and Watchmen. In the '10s we had Deadpool and the Zack Snyder DC movies with their unprecedented cynical take on Superman. It all continues today with Venom and Batman spinoffs.

wow, suddenly I feel like the film "Venom" was trying to teach me this, it's no good for the virus if it keeps killing its hosts, really its mutating itself while searching for a host that can coexist with it (as I understand it, much of our DNA is incorporated from viruses, but I don't understand it very well :)

Unrelated, sort of, but I was watching Venom the other day and noticed QQ was heavily marketed in the film. Also sponsored and funded by Tencent. This made me feel a bit dirty. I’d never knowingly use any software by them.

At least 30% of my enjoyment of Venom came from it being set in SF and me going “Hey look I know that corner!” or “Wow we’ve been to that restaurant, they totally used a different place for that shop front!”

Seeing your town in a movie is incredibly rewarding. Just like a musician is basically required to shout “Hello $PLACE” at some point during a performance

PS: for the downvoters, that’s what the linked article cites as the reason that movie gets extra scenes in China. Chinese audiences liked seeing their city in a scene that Western audiences didn’t care about.

Better off by what metric? Nothing is stopping people from making and watching small budget movies. They just choose not to. The last movie I watched was Venom. $100 million budget. I thought it was awesome. If you could get everyone who watched Venom opening day to pay $1 you could shoot and distribute a real movie using modern technology. But those people don’t want to watch your $1 movie, they would rather pay $14 to watch Venom. You may not be alone in preferring small budget movies, but you’re clearly in a small minority.

My justification is blacklisting rather than whitelisting. You are not born guilty and have to prove you are of a good character. Just because you can commit a crime does not mean we should ban everything you can use to commit crime.

If I link to Venom the movie I still have permission from the pirate bay to link to it. The pirate bay or the uploader (who actually created the file itself and the description to that file) will be the author. [if you don't think the uploaded is the author of the new file checkout what you get charged for in the UK for downloading a child pornography file -> creating a NEW child pornography file. obvs not supporting child porn but i still feel this is a bit excesive]

Like links are nothing more than pointers. It's like saying if you had permission from the author of this book can you only tell other people.

As for the permanent copyright -> Your work is not original it's a remix (there is a great video on youtube). You never come up with an original idea. It's always influenced by others. So this kinda kills the whole "original idea" myth we have. Let's say you have to write a short story no more than 5 words. There are just N possible combinations you can do. What you should have copyright until the universe ended because you wrote every single combination? Just because you were the first person to go to the moon does not mean you own the moon. Why should it be any diff with the 5 words sentance you were asked to write?

It's seen as facile within the industry. Hence the reputation and lack of prestigious awards recognition. Easy to write, cheap to produce, and now in the digital era, the jump cut scare tricks and camera effects can be inserted by the dozen. See the trailer for Blumhouse's The Nun to get a sense.

But with the blockbuster success of films like It, Get Out, and A Quiet Place we will see something never witnessed before in cinema history: the coming of the big budget horror flick. I think The Conjuring 2 budget was upwards of $40M. And it looked terrific. The upcoming Venom and Shane Black's The Predator are no doubt deeply influenced by classic horror tropes.

But for the real deal. Still nothing compares to the classics. I finally got to screen David Cronenberg's Videodrome the other night. Holy Guacamole. They don't make anything quite like that anymore ;)

The category you land in is "Hot" which represents items that are new and popular. They generally end up being movies/tv series that are soon to be released.

If watch enough or click "Browse", you can start watching things based on what VOD you have (Netflix, Hulu, etc), what genre you're interested in, general rating, and more.

We thought that new-comers to the site would be more interested in seeing a trailer for Venom, Avengers, or Deadpool than seeing a trailer for Jaws or Scarface.

You can definitely browse the VOD, newly added, genres, etc to find something for right now at home... but you can also learn what's coming out, what's out now, and what was recently released (soon to be on DVD).
