In the movie Wolf Warrior 2 the hero calls for support from the Chinese Navy, which waits for UN approval and then launches a missile with a cluster warhead from something that looks a bit like a Zumwalt-class destroyer

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zumwalt-class_destroyer

which has the kind of steathy construction that many nations are adopting but that the US is struggling to build. It reminds me of the trouble the Navy had circa 1970 when it decided tube guns were out and missiles were in and there were legislators who were offended that the new ships didn't look aggressive enough.

The US isn't going to lose the next war to Russia, China or Iran, it's going to lose it to Boeing, Lockheed-Martin and General Dynamics.

    > I really liked Wolf Warrior 2 on the other hand and I'd add that that movies is not about nurturing resentments or seeking conflict with the west in the slightest unlike some Chinese movements that have come out since them

That movie is so about nurturing resentment and conflict with the West, that it coined the term wolf warrior diplomacy

The Fugitive was a good movie but I think the Transformers and Fast and Furious series are trash. I really liked Wolf Warrior 2 on the other hand and I'd add that that movies is not about nurturing resentments or seeking conflict with the west in the slightest unlike some Chinese movements that have come out since them. I only wish Ne Zha had not been packed with fart jokes but that's what you get when you are cribbing from Dreamworks movies.

This reads like a CCP response. I note nearly all your comment history is defending the CCP.

    >> "wolf warrior" is a manufactured western label for PRC being diplomatically assertive in response to assertive western moves against PRC interests.

Actually “Wolf Warrior” is an extremely anti western, deeply hostile Chinese movie. The aggressive Chinese diplomacy was named Wolf Warrior because the level of hostility was similar.

You can watch it here, it’s startlingly aggressive in its stance:

    Wikipedia:

Wolf warrior diplomacy (Chinese: 战狼外交; pinyin: Zhànláng Wàijiāo) is a style of coercive diplomacy[2] adopted by Chinese diplomats during the Xi Jinping administration. The term was coined from the Chinese action film Wolf Warrior 2.

When the US started transitioning to vertical launched missile ships circa 1970 Robert McNamara had a lot of trouble with Congress because the ships didn't look as aggressive as previous ships and might not intimidate our foes.

Quite a few ships with some history are docked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard awaiting decommissioning

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/Philadelphia,+PA/@39.8954125,-75.1883747,1121m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c6b7d8d4b54beb:0x89f514d88c3e58c1!8m2!3d39.9525839!4d-75.1652215

but vertical launch missile ships never gripped the public imagination and I'm afraid none of them will turn up as museum ships which I find sad. (Note if you scroll down a little you will see the John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier which is also in line to be scrapped; there's certainly demand for aircraft carrier museums but it is so expensive to run one that nobody can do it.)

The Chinese on the other hand are very proud of their VLS missile ships and feature them in action movies like Wolf Warrior 2.

Not just Americans. See 'Wolf Warrior', and 'Wolf Warrior 2', currently the second highest-grossing Chinese movie.

    >The movies don't get published here (for obvious reasons)

I saw Wolf Warrior 2 at the AMC cinema in Sunnyvale, California. There weren’t a lot of showtimes but the theater was packed for my showing. Chinese audio with English subtitles. Thought it was an entertaining action movie with some ridiculous propaganda set pieces a la Rambo. My mostly Chinese (maybe Taiwanese? didn’t ask) fellow audience members audibly groaned en masse at some of these, like when the hero gets a truck full of refugees past some African rebels by dramatically waving a PRC flag.

An American friend of mine saw the film a few months later on a cross-country fight, the airline had it on the inflight entertainment system. It’s also apparently on Prime Video. So such movies can be found here for those who want to see them; that’s just a pretty small group of people.

For me it is not so much the price as the product range.

I prefer Best Buy to Amazon when I can. I use my Best Buy credit card preferentially to my Amazon card. Best Buy's prices for movies are often better than Amazon's prices. However, Amazon Marketplace has more obscure movies. For instance I am into Chinese movies and TV shows like Three Kingdoms, Dream of the Red Chamber and Wolf Warrior 2 and Best Buy just doesn't have these. Sometimes Amazon does, but I end up going to bootleggers from Singapore and other strange places to get my fix.

Sometimes I feel like Best Buy wants to fit me in a little box. I wanted an NFC reader for my PC. Best Buy chooses not to carry such things. I am looking for a VR headset to support software development, Best Buy chooses only to carry Facebook products. (Nope, I deleted my Facebook account and I'm not making a new one for that.)

Most interestingly, Amazon Marketplace lets you evade shortages by paying a higher price right now. For instance, Epson EcoTank Pro and EcoTank Photo printers are sold out at Dell, B&H photo, Adorama and such. You can pay a premium and get one today on Amazon.

Oddly many adversaries of the US (such as Colombian drug gangs) have fielded stealth boats, but thanks to cost disease the US has fielded only 3

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zumwalt-class_destroyer

That kind of boat disappears in the clutter for a sea-based radar and pulse doppler won't help as much as it helps for airplanes since boats don't move as fast. With satellite SAR the clutter won't be so bad, in fact, the resolution is probably high enough that you see the absence of roughness from waves.

    ---

The US hides modern missile boats from the public eye since they don't bristle with aggressive-looking guns. I saw this

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Vincennes_(CG-49)

and many other boats of its type rusting at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. None of them will be made into museum ships, which is a shame.

China, on the other hand, makes action movies like 𝑊𝑜𝑙𝑓 𝑊𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟 2 that show how proud they are of ships that can shoot cluster bombs out of vertical launch tubes.

If you want Chinese exceptionalism, watch Wolf Warrior 2. I watched it in a theatre in London full of Chinese people, and it was a surreal experience, because to me it felt like watching a Chinese version of Hot Shots or similar crazy parody, but nobody in the cinema were laughing.

I really enjoyed the movie, but it also shows Chinese filmmaking reaching the level of over the top patriotism you saw in 1980's US war movies.

American studios eventually turned to mocking that, as in the aforementioned Hot Shots movies and others. I wonder when we get to see the same mocking of Ip-Man and Wolf Warrior by Chinese movies.

Speaking of propaganda, can we talk about how good the movies Wolf Warrior and Wolf Warrior 2 is? Both films feature Chinese military protagonists and both films feature western villains.

These films remind me of Rambo even including the jingoistic pro-nation-of-origin message.

I think the international market accepted Rambo because they thought USA was cool. I wonder if we will find ourselves consuming “Chinakana” (riff on “Americana”) when we think China is “cool.”

This article made me think of a Chinese film called ‘The Wolf Warrior 2’ where the benevolent Chinese save an unnamed African country. I believe it’s one of the highest grossing Chinese films ever and might shed some light on Chinese attitudes toward Africa/Africans.

It feels like ‘Starship Troopers’ level propaganda and is completely straight faced.

The villagers constantly thank the Chinese hero for his over-the-tip acts of bravery, they celebrate when he wins local drinking contests, etc.
