Clear the runway for Derek Zoolander, VH1's three-time male model of the year. His face falls when hippie-chic Hansel scooters in to steal this year's award. The evil fashion guru Mugatu seizes the opportunity to turn Derek into a killing machine. It's a well-designed conspiracy and only with the help of Hansel and a few well-chosen accessories like Matilda can Derek make the world safe for male models everywhere.

I think this was predicted in that "documentary"... hmmm, Zoolander... with the fashion-line "Derelicte"...

Ask Russian-speakers to recommend a fun iconic movie to watch, and Ivan Vasilievich comes up all the time. I don’t see why, but it does.
Diamond Hand too.
It would be ridiculous if the same were true about Hollywood.
A Russian asks an American what movies to watch, and 8 out of 10 people go back to 1969 to recommend the same one? Impossible.
You’d get everything from Citizen Kane to Hitchcock to Rocky, etc. But you’d also get about 150 great picks from the 80s and 90s, and another dozen from after 2000.
And forget the greats. You’d get Zoolander, Demolition Man, Total Recall, Gremlins, Scream, John Wick, Legally Blonde even… there’s such a wide pool of fun iconic popcorn movies for any person.
Not to mention your Star Wars/Trek/Gate.
These movies aren’t “good” in the sense of being art. They’re good in the sense of people wanting to watch them.
Every n years I rewatch Commando, Con-Air, The Last Starfighter, etc just for kicks. It’s not pure nostalgia- they’re fun movies.
With int’l movies from any given country the list of recommendations is extremely shallow. It’s always one or two iconic revelations from a given decade. Or a couple auteur directors who won all the awards for their think-pieces about the human condition.

> The movies with the best writing are pretty much never the ones with huge effects budgets.
The contrast was highlighted on a recent flight I took. I watched Zoolander while the guy next to me watched some Avengers movie starring Thanos. Not only were the colors more vibrant in Zoolander, the camera was always in focus. Even with $200mil on VFX, it was still blurry and soft-focus.
I was once on a flight watching Zoolander while a guy next to me watched some Avengers movie. The contrast in color grading between the two was shocking. Zoolander had crisp differentiated colors/objects, while the Avengers film was a morass of soft-focus muted purple and brown.
> Another argument you could advance is that TV and Film have generally been moving away from comedy as a genre
I noticed this for movies and it makes me sad. I asked people around me what's the latest funny, full-on comedy they've seen, and I think the newest one would be "Tropic Thunder" which is 13 years old.
There are still a couple around, but I can't think of an equivalent of "Airplane!" or "Blazing Saddles" for the current generation. The closest one is probably half of "Zoolander", and even that one is almost old enough to drink.
If you mashed together the movies Wolf of Wall Street and Zoolander, you’d get WeWork.
haven't seen him anything since Zoolander ... that said, his son is pretty good, Max Brookes wrote World War Z (only tangentially related to the movie of the same name).
How many folks here still buy media (movies/TV) from Apple? I've never had an Apple TV, but I pretty much buy exclusively off of Amazon. Not only can I use the same iOS/Web app to view my purchased videos as the Amazon Prime streaming collection, but Amazon Prime is available on every other device I use, including smart Samsung TVs, PS4, and Android devices. Whereas the few things I've purchased off of the Apple store (sadly, classics like Aliens and Zoolander) are forever locked in the Apple ecosystem. I don't buy much music thanks to Spotify, but when I do I use Amazon Music as I suspect that will have more portability than iTunes will ever have.
The big difference between the Floppy and the USB/3.5mm/whatever is that the Floppy Drive was a device and these are ports. People might have been excited about new peripherals that fill the vacuum created by removing the floppy. But no one gets excited about having to buy a new dongle.
Going from wired to wireless is bigger than depreciation, because wires have physical functions beyond transferring data (keeping earbuds together).
The thinner-Thinner-THINNER mantra sounds very much like applied to cellphones in the pre-smartphone era. Which movie will make fun it in a Zoolander-esque way? When will we snap back and realize usability trumps style in the end.
LOL if there's ever a zoolander movie for signal processing I want that line in.
> like good fire protection lulling you into the belief that fire never happens. so lets splash around in gasoline, because freedom and conspiracies by big firefighters.
Really made me think of the Zoolander movie : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnZ2XdqGZWU#t=2m16s
There is evidence of the nation’s cultural divide in the results, with “Zoolander” (a 2001 movie starring Ben Stiller) and Vengaboys (a Dutch dance-pop band) popular in the easiest places and Kenneth Nixon, of the rock band Framing Hanley, popular in the hardest places."
Vengaboys, huh?

Are the easiest places to live in the TV advertising markets of Six Flags, by any chance?
